DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team is set to make the short trek east on I-94 for a non-conference, in-state affair with the University of Detroit Mercy, Saturday, Dec. 21. Tipoff from historic Calihan Hall is slated for 12 p.m.
Eastern (4-6) has notched consecutive victories for the first time this season after defeating Purdue Fort Wayne, Dec. 10, and Illinois-Chicago, Dec. 18. Meanwhile, UDM (0-10) is still in search of its first win of the season. The Titans fell, 82-64, in their most recent affair, against Toledo, Dec. 14.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Fans can also follow live stats at EMUEagles.com/livestats, or get live updates from the team's Twitter, @EMUWBB.
TWICE IS NICE: Eastern's win over UIC, Dec. 18, gave the team consecutive wins for the first time during the 2019-20 campaign. The Eagles dominated Purdue Fort Wayne, 64-40, Dec. 10, before taking care of the Flames, 68-59. The win over Illinois-Chicago was also the squad's first on the road this season. The Eagles were previously 0-4 away from Ypsilanti.
HOW ABOUT HUDSON: Junior center Autumn Hudson authored her best performance of the season against UIC, Dec. 18. The Richwood, Ohio native scored a season-high 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, and tied for the team-lead with five rebounds. Hudson leads all Eagles in rebounding this season, averaging six per game. Despite a career free throw percentage at 35 percent, she was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe against the Flames.
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: Eastern's ability to protect the ball certainly contributed to its victory at UIC, Dec. 18. The Eagles gave it away just 11 times against the Flames, which ties for the team's second lowest total of the season. On the defensive end of the court, Eastern was able to force 28 turnovers.
SECOND CHANCE WINNERS: EMU both created and took advantage of second-chance opportunities at Illinois-Chicago, Dec. 18. Of the Eagles' 38 rebounds, 20 were on the offensive glass, a factor that contributed to EMU outscoring UIC, 17-8, in second-chance scoring.
LIGHT'EM UP: Eastern was led by freshman standout Aaliyah Stanley against UIC, Dec. 18. The Boynton Beach, Fla. native tied a career-high with 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting. The electric guard has racked up seven double-digit scoring efforts through the first 10 games of the season for EMU. Stanley ranks second on the team and 13th in the Mid-American Conference in scoring this season (14.2 ppg). Her 38.5 percent clip from deep is the best of any Eagle, and ranks fifth in the league.
FOUR-FOR-FOUR: Redshirt junior guard Areanna Combs has been outstanding for the Eagles in the four games she has played this season. The Oklahoma City native has scored in double-figures in each contest, dropping a season-best 29 points against Binghamton, Dec. 1. In all, Combs is averaging a team-best 17.5 points per game, an average that only four players in the MAC have outpaced this season.
ALL-TIME AGAINST DETROIT: EMU and UDM will meet for the 29th time on Saturday. The Titans hold a 15-13 all-time advantage, but Eastern has won five of the last six matchups between the schools.
In the most recent matchup between the squads, it was Eastern that was able to pull away at the end, claiming a 60-53 victory over the Titans, Dec. 5, 2018, at the Convocation Center.
LAST TIME AT CALIHAN: A gritty effort saw the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team erase a 13-point deficit with three and a half minutes to play to knock of UDM, 78-76, Sunday, Dec. 17. It was EMU's 16th win after trailing by 10-or-more points since the 2009-10 season and its biggest comeback under Head Coach Fred Castro, as well as Eastern Michigan's first road win since in a span of 17 games.
RIGHT DOWN THE ROAD: Calihan Hall resides just 38 miles from EMU's Convocation Center, making it the closest road venue that the team will play in this season. EMU women's hoops is not the only Eagle team that has seen action in Detroit this season. The men's basketball team defeated UDM at Calihan, Dec. 7. Additionally, the EMU football team is set to play in the 2019 Quick Lane Bowl, held at Detroit's Ford Field, Dec. 26.
AGAINST THE HORIZON: EMU owns a 60-44 record against current Horizon League foes. Home to UIC and nine other institutions, the Eagles have battled all but one of the members of the Indianapolis, Ind.-based conference (IUPUI).
Given the proximity, it comes as no surprise that EMU has squared off against Detroit Mercy more than any other Horizon League opponent, with 28 meetings taking place between the two all-time. While Eastern trails in the all-time series, 15-13, against Detroit Mercy, EMU holds the upper hand versus Cleveland State (12-5), Illinois-Chicago (10-4), Valparaiso (5-3), Wright State (7-0), and Youngstown State (4-2). The Green and White sit level with Oakland (7-7) and Milwaukee (2-2) all-time, and are winless in the all-time series against Green Bay (0-5).
ALL THE LEAGUES EMU WILL FACE: The Eagles will play teams hailing from eight different Division I conferences this season. In addition to its 18-game Mid-American Conference slate, EMU will face three Horizon League members, two teams from the Big Ten Conference, as well as one opponent from the Missouri Valley Conference, Ohio Valley Conference, America East Conference, American Athletic Conference, and the Summit League.
ON THE HORIZON: Eastern will enjoy a short holiday break before entering Mid-American Conference play. The team will face Bowling Green, Jan. 4, at the Convocation Center to begin its quest for the MAC crown.
