YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team came up short against the University of Michigan, falling 57-38 to its Washtenaw County rivals, Wednesday, Nov. 27, inside the Convocation Center.
Sophomore Natalia Pineda (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson) matched a career-high with a team-best 16 points and four triples, while adding a pair of rebounds, a block, and an assist. Freshman Aaliyah Stanley (Boynton Beach, Fla.-Oxbridge Academy) tallied eight points, two boards, and a steal, while junior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) pulled down a team-high eight boards and recorded one block.
Additionally, redshirt sophomore Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wash.-Garfield) contributed four points, five boards, two assists, and a pair of steals, while junior Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton) and sophomore Kiara Johnson (Buffalo, N.Y.-Cardinal O'Hara) each scored four bench points.
The Eagles (2-4) were frustrated for much of the game on the offensive end, finishing 23.6 percent (13-of-55) overall, while the Wolverines (5-1) shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the field. EMU tallied more second-chance points than Michigan, 11-5, but the visitors held the edge in rebounds (46-39), steals (9-7), and blocks (4-3).
A layup from sophomore Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) opened the scoring with 7:33 left in the first quarter, as the Green and White kept the Wolverines off the board for more than three minutes to begin the contest. Pineda's jumper gave EMU a 4-2 lead with 3:37 to go in the first period, but the hosts fell behind 8-4 heading into the second stanza.
Trailing 26-9 at the intermission, the Eagles made nearly half of their field-goal attempts (6-for-13) during the third quarter. EMU outscored Michigan during the frame, 20-18, to trim the deficit to 17, but could not close the gap over the final 10 minutes as the Wolverines secured a 57-38 result.
Eastern takes to the highway for a two-game road trip, as it travels to Vestal, N.Y. for a matchup against Binghamton, Dec. 1, before taking on Wichita State, Dec. 7, in Wichita, Kan.
