Areanna Combs scored 29 points in her EMU debut
VESTAL, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – On the court for the first leg of a two-part, non-conference road trip, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team fell, 78-67, to Binghamton University today, Dec. 1, at the BU Events Center.
Eastern (2-5) was led by redshirt junior guard Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)), who scored 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting in her EMU debut. Despite her efficient scoring effort, and her team-leading seven boards, the Eagles were unable to keep pace with Binghamton (8-0), who remained unbeaten with its victory.
First quarter shooting troubles, including just an 18.8 percent clip by the Green and White, contributed to an early deficit for EMU, which found itself trailing by 10, 20-10, at the end of the first frame. Impactful from the beginning, Combs paced the squad with six early points. Team scoring leader, freshman Aaliyah Stanley (Boynton Beach, Fla.-Oxbridge Academy) added three points when she dropped-in her team-best 14th triple of the season with just 29 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Despite the deficit, EMU opened the second quarter with clear determination, cutting the lead to five, 29-24, with 2:27 to play in the half. Down, 29-18, the Eagles went on a six-point run, sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from junior guard Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton), and Stanley.
Binghamton was able to snatch the momentum right back, closing the half on a 5-to-1 run and taking a seven point lead, 34-27, into the locker room.
The second half saw improved play from both teams. After quickly regaining a double-digit advantage, 38-28, Binghamton was met by a 6-0 EMU run. Junior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) contributed a key bucket in that span, combining with jumpers from Combs and Lewis to get the Eagles back in the game. The Bearcats again counter-punched, opening up an 18-point lead by the end of the quarter, 62-44.
Despite outscoring BU, 23-16, in the fourth quarter, including a 10-point final-period effort from Combs, the Eagles were unable to mount a successful comeback, falling, 78-67, in the Sunday morning showdown.
Following today's game, Eastern will have nearly one week to prep for its next opponent, Wichita State. The game between the Eagles and Shockers is scheduled to tipoff at 3 p.m. (2 p.m. CT) from Charles Koch Arena, in Wichita, Kan.
