Eagles Soar Past RedHawks in First Dual Meet of the Season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team captured its first dual meet win of the 2019-20 season Saturday, Oct. 26 against Mid-American Conference foe Miami University at Jones Natatorium. Coming down to the last events, the Eagles managed to secure the win, 152-148.
EMU captured six wins and 20 additional top-three finishes over the course of the first home meet.
Eastern Michigan started the afternoon with a win in the 200 medley relay by senior Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South), junior Elli Machado (Reading, Pa.-Exeter Township), junior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley), and senior Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline), who combined for a time of 1:44.81.
Following the strong start, freshman Savanna Mouat (Tecumseh, Ontario-All Saints) and junior Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) finished first and second in the 1,000 freestyle with marks of 10:19.95 and 10:23.42, respectively.
Senior Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville), Young, and junior Avrie Stewart (Menominee, Mich.-Menominee) earned two podium sweeps in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. Gavigan took the top spot in both events with times of 55.88 and 2:01.37. Young finished runner-up in both events with marks of 56.53 and 2:05.16, while Stewart claimed third place in both trials at 57.14 and 2:05.32.
In diving, senior Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) earned both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving titles, scoring 270.91 in 1-meter and 252.68 in 3-meter.
The Eagles will take on MAC opponent Ball State in Muncie, Ind. next Saturday, Nov. 2 to continue the fall slate.
