Eagles Defeat Kent State, 3-2, in Overtime Thriller

Kylie Frantz scored her first goal of the season

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team (4-9-2, 3-4-0 MAC) fought to the end to claim a Mid-American Conference road victory over Kent State University (5-7-2, 3-3-1 MAC), 3-2, in overtime at Dix Stadium. The win marks EMU's first overtime win of the season.

The Eagles found the back of the net first in the 13th minute. After a throw in, junior Parys Kerr (Whitby, Ontario-Pickering) lofted the ball to redshirt junior Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street), who headed it to the top left corner for the 1-0 lead.

Kent State responded with a goal of their own in the 20th minute to tie the match at one.

With 24 seconds remaining in the first half, redshirt senior Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name) drew the keeper to the left side of the box and crossed the ball to Kylie Frantz (Erie, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), who sent it in for her first goal of the season and to put the Green and White up, 2-1, heading into the break.

Eastern held the lead until the 84th minute, when the Eagles were called for fouling in the box, awarding a penalty kick to Kent State. The Golden Flashes scored on the kick to tie the match at 2.

In overtime, the Eagles earned a corner kick in the 94th minute. Nicole Remedios' (Ajax, Ontario-Archbishop Dennis O'Connor) perfectly-placed set piece found McNeill's head for the game-winner.

Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Abbotts (Ottawa, Ontario-Mother Teresa) made her first career start, collecting seven saves and facing 21 shots. Eastern Michigan tallied just 10 shots in the win, compared to Kent State's 22, while the Golden Flashes also edged the Eagles in corner kicks, seven-to-four.

The Green and White continue their MAC road tilt Sunday, Oct. 20 against Ohio. The match is set to kickoff at 1 p.m. in Athens, Ohio.
