YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team came out on top in its home opener as EMU topped Mid-American Conference foe Ball State University, 194.125-192.875, inside the Convocation Center Thursday night, Jan. 24. It marked Eastern's sixth straight win over Ball State.
"I was really pleased with our performance today," Head Coach Katie Minnasola said. "We stuck quite a few landings, which was one of our focuses this week in practice. We loved being back at the Convocation Center, and competing at home. We are looking forward to carrying this momentum into next Thursday's meet."
The Eagles and the Cardinals split the day, with EMU topping bars (48.300) and floor (48.725), while BSU took vault and beam.
Eastern started the day on vault with senior Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill.-Belleville) taking first with a score of 9.775 for a season-best. Following Gresham for the Green and White were sophomore Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and junior Allie Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton), both earning 9.700 and tying for eighth.
On bars, EMU had a strong showing, with sophomore Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) finishing first with a career-high 9.850. Bezold was followed closely by junior Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) and sophomore Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn.-Central) who scored 9.700 and 9.675, respectively.
The Eagles had a season-high showing on beam scoring a 48.675, including one career-best and four season-bests. Freshman Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) led the way with a career-high 9.775 en route to a third-place finish. Following Satler, Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) and Rondeau added a pair of 9.750s and Dobronics turned in a 9.725.
The Green and White finished on floor, where Dobronics took the top spot with a 9.850, tying her season-high. In second, Satler earned a career-best 9.775. Freshman Shannon Gregory (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens), Smith, and Rondeau all scored 9.675s, to tie for fifth.
