BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Overcoming an unexpected road trip thanks to the polar vortex, the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team bested Bowling Green State University, 194.150-193.775, in Mid-American Conference competition Thursday night, Jan. 31, at Anderson Arena.
"We took a detour in our road trip with a venue change but kept the vehicle moving forward." said Head Coach Katie Minasola "We started the meet strong on bars, sticking six dismounts. We kept the momentum going through vault, but struggled a bit on floor. Finishing strong on beam with several career-highs and a season-high team total. I am so proud of the way the team battled through adversity to the finish. Now its time to pull it all together for Sunday."
The Eagles started on bars with a career-high performance by sophomore Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio.-Bishop Fenwick), who led the way with a 9.850. Junior Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) chipped in a 9.775, while senior Carly Clark (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) posted a 9.700 as EMU finished the first rotation with 48.650.
Moving over to vault, sophomore Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) had a career-high score of 9.800, and was followed by junior Allie Smith's (Telford, Pa.-Souderton) 9.775. Hultgren and Dobronics also helped out with scores of 9.700, leading to EMU's total of 48.600.
On floor, Eastern Michigan finished with a 47.825. Dobronics and sophomore Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn.-Central) led the way for the Green and White, both scoring 9.800.
EMU finished the meet on beam, seeing career-bests from Hultgren, freshman Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), and Dobronics en route to a season-best score of 49.075. Hultgren and Satler tied atop the standings with a 9.875 each, while Dobronics added a 9.825. Clark followed by sticking a 9.800, and Rondeau pitched in 9.700 to round out Eastern's scores and seal the victory.
Eastern will have a quick turnaround as it heads to the University of Illinois-Chicago Sunday, Feb. 3, at noon. The Eagles are in search of their sixth straight win over the Flames.
