Eastern dominated the paint, but it was not enough for the victory
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – A last-second shot attempt rattled around the rim and fell out for the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team, as the Eagles suffered a heartbreaking, 51-49, setback at the University of Akron Tuesday night, Jan. 15, in James A. Rhodes Arena.
After a missed layup with just six seconds to go, EMU (8-9, 2-2 MAC), trailing by one, quickly fouled UA (10-7, 2-2 MAC) to send the Zips to the line. After connecting on the first attempt to make it a two-point advantage, Akron missed the second shot and redshirt senior Paul Jackson's (Stone Mountaint, Ga.-Martin Luther King Jr. (Eastern Kentucky)) coast-to-coast attempt rattled out as time expired.
Jackson led the Eagles, along with redshirt junior Boubacar Toure (Dakar, Senegal-Phase One Academy (Grand Canyon), with 15 points apiece. Jackson also had five assists and four blocks, while Toure added 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Senior James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) was dominant on the boards, leading all players with 11.
Eastern dominated the game inside the paint, outscoring Akron 34-16 inside while also outrebounding the Zips, 35-25. In the end, it was the Eagles' inability to find a consistent stroke from downtown that set them back, going just 3-of-15 from the beyond the arc.
The Green and White finished with a higher overall shooting percentage (44.0 percent to 42.2 percent), but managed just 20 percent from behind the three-point line compared to Akron's 30 percent. The Eagles also committed more turnovers (17 to 13), and recorded seven fewer free throw attempts (5 to 12).
Eastern Michigan finishes its home-and-home series with MAC leader and No. 16-ranked University at Buffalo Friday, Jan. 18. The Eagles and Bulls will play on ESPNU with tip time schedule for 7 p.m.
