James Thompson IV's seventh double-double of the season led the way for EMU

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team could not keep pace with No. 16 University at Buffalo Friday, Jan. 18, falling 77-65 in Mid-American Conference action inside Alumni Arena.

The Eagles (8-10, 2-3 MAC) trailed by just four with seven minutes to go in the first half when the Bulls (17-1, 5-0 MAC) used a 19-3 run to close out the frame. Though able to cut the lead to as few as two in the second stanza, Eastern ultimately could not keep the Buffalo offense at bay, as UB went on a 17-1 run over a four minute span to put the game on ice.

Senior James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) led the way for the Eagles on his birthday with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. The forward registered his seventh double-double of the season and 66th of his career. Redshirt senior Paul Jackson (Stone Mountain, Ga.-Martin Luther King Jr. (Eastern Kentucky)) led the way on the offensive end, scoring 12 points, while redshirt junior Boubacar Toure (Dakar, Sengal-Phase One Academy (Grand Canyon)) and redshirt sophomore Ty Groce (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Lincoln) chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

EMU shot a respectable 40 percent from the floor in the game, but connected on just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from beyond the arc. UB, meanwhile, shot 45.8 percent overall and 32.3 (10-of-31) from downtown. The Bulls also controlled the rebounding battle (39-29) and points in the paint (34-30), while the Eagles forced UB into 16 turnovers while committing just 14 themselves, and finished with nine steals to Buffalo's seven.

UB's CJ Massinburg ended a four-game slump by scoring 31 points, while Nick Perkins scored 21. Overall, the Bulls have won 20 straight home games, which ranks as the third-longest streak in the nation.

Eastern Michigan returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 22 against Bowling Green State University inside the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. The game is the conclusion of EMU's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. Tickets are available by calling 734.487,3669 or visiting EMUEagles.com/tickets.
