YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Gregory Lawson II netted 17 points as the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team was edged, 66-64, against the University of Akron Tuesday, Feb. 3, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center in Mid-American Conference action.

Eastern led, 52-43, with 8:57 to go, in addition to holding a 64-63 advantage before Akron drilled the game-winning three-pointer with 8.1 seconds.
 
Lawson II (Saginaw, Mich./Oak Cliff Academy) was 5-for-7 (71.4%) from three-point range as the freshman has scored 54 points in the last three games.

Addison Patterson (Mississauga, Ontario/Bella Vista College Prep/Northwestern State) added 16 points and six rebounds as Eastern fell to the Zips, which are one game behind Miami for first-place in the conference.

Mohammad Habhab (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn/Central Michigan) chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
 
How It Happened
The first 10 minutes of the game saw seven lead changes as each team was trading blows, Patterson led the way with seven points in the opening ten. 

After more back-and-forth scoring by each team, Eastern took a 26-24 lead with just under 5 minutes remaining thanks to a pair of triples by Lawson II. EMU trailed, 31-27, at halftime.

Eastern got out to a blazing start to the second half, using an 11-0 run to take a 40-34 lead as the hosts held Akron to 0-of-9 shooting from three-point range in the first 10 minutes of the second half. 
 
EMU continued to put the pressure on the visitors, extending its advantage to 52-43 with 8:57 to go before the Zips went on a long 15-6 run to even the score at 55 with just over five minutes to play. After Patterson scored at the 4:59 mark, Akron scored the game's next six points to lead, 61-57, with 2:36 left.



Habhab's free throw with 20.3 seconds left put Eastern ahead but Akron hit a three-pointer with 8.1 seconds remaining to put the visitors back up, 66-64. Eastern's shot with four seconds fell short while a tip-in attempt before the buzzer did not fall.

 » Eastern moves to 9-14 overall and 3-8 in the MAC while Akron moves to 19-4 overall and 10-1 in conference play.
 » Eastern was 23-of-57 (40.4%) from the field and 8-of-20 (40%) from the three-point line, while Akron was 23-of-61 (37.7%) from the floor and 10-of-34 (29.4%) from three-point range.
» Eastern shot better than Akron (40.4%-37.7%). The Eagles' record fell to 9-2 when outshooting opponents this season, with both losses coming in the last two games. The last time the Eagles dropped two in a row while out-shooting their opponent was Feb. 7 and 11, 2023, in games against Buffalo and Toledo, respectively.
» The Eagles allowed just 26 points in the paint, a sharp decrease from the 70 they allowed in the past meeting with the Zips, Dec. 19, 2025. 
 » Gregory Lawson II converted a career-high five three-point field goal attempts, topping his previous mark of three, which he had against Northern Illinois, Jan. 13. His total was also a season high for the Eagles, the last Eagle to have five or more three pointers in a game was Jalen Terry, when he made six, Feb. 22, 2025, at NIU. The five three-pointers is the highest total by an Eagle freshman since Arne Osojnik made six, Feb. 27, 2024, against Western Michigan.
 » Addison Patterson scored 16 points, his 11th-straight game with at least 10 points. Patterson has 18 games with at least 10 points this season with 14 of those coming in the last 15 games.
 » Godslove Nwabude (Anambra State, Nigeria/Mt. Zion Prep (Md.)) recorded two blocks, marking his ninth multi-block game of the season. His nine games with multiple blocks are the most by an Eagle since Boubacar Toure in the 2019-20 season where he recorded 14 games with multiple blocks.
 » Mohammad Habhab netted 11 points, his 18th game scoring at least 10 points this season.
