THREE RIVERS, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team topped Western Michigan University at the George Dales Invitational in Three Rivers, Mich. Friday, Sept. 7. EMU finished the 5k with all nine runners within the top-15, including four in the top-five, closing out the meet with a team score of 19 points.
"I think that it was a solid team effort, said EMU Head Coach Sue Parks. "The pace was slow for the first half of the race and everyone was tightly bunched but the girls did a good job of executing the second half. We're excited to take the momentum of this win into the next two weeks of training before we head to Boston."
Senior co-captain Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville) took the individual title and led the Eagles with a time of 17:20.1. Fellow co-captain and redshirt senior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) followed close behind, crossing in 17:30.4 to capture silver.
In her first year donning the Green and White, junior transfer Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) claimed fourth place, running to a time of 17:56.6. Sophomore Madison Distelrath (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) rounded out Eastern's top-five finishers, crossing in a personal-best 5k time of 18:01.1 to place fifth.
EMU has a week off from action before it returns for the Battle In Beantown in Boston, Mass. Friday, Sept. 21.
