LONDON, Ontario (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team placed sixth at the Western International Invitational hosted by the University of Western Ontario Saturday, Sept. 22 in London, Ontario. EMU finished with a team score of 142 points.
"Each week of training has been a learning experience for this team as they are experiencing very different training than they have been accustomed to," said EMU Head Coach John Goodridge. "Likewise, for four of our top-five scorers this was their 8000 meter collegiate competition debut. I am very pleased with their progress and believe we will get better each week for the remainder of the season."
The Invitational ran particularly fast, with not only a new course record set, but with the top-six times besting the previous course record. Although the Eagles did not finish with any course records, every second-year runner posted a personal-best 8k time.
Junior captain Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) paced Eastern, finishing 21st with a career-best time of 24:58. The final four scorers for EMU were all first-year runners debuting in their first collegiate 8k. Freshmen Kalani Sheridan (Nelson, New Zealand), Noah Perrin (Akron, Ohio-Woodridge), Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River), and Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) placed 28th, 31st, 41st, and 54th, respectively.
Eastern will have another week off of competition before it takes on the Jayhawk Invitational in Muskegon, Mich. Friday, Oct. 12.
