EMU's five selections ranked tied for second-most of any MAC school
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team saw five Eagles garner Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar recognition as the organization released the team Wednesday, July 3. EMU's five selections ranked tied for second-most in the Mid-American Conference, while the Green and White were one of six MAC schools to have three-or-more student-athletes recognized.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50. EMU's three selections come from a 1,011 player list ranging from Division I, II, and III.
Earning the award for Eastern Michigan were Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford), sophomores Katelin Lawson (LaSalle, Ontario-Ridge Community (Tampa)) and Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne), freshman Pattraporn Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International), and senior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne). Beck picks up the honor for the third time in her career, while Connelly lands on the list for the second consecutive season.
Stevenson, a sports management major with a 3.55 GPA, took part in all 26 rounds, recording an average of 82.04. She fired the best rounds of her career at the Kzoo Classic to finish 11th with a 236 (79-74-83). Stevenson also finished 45th at the Mary Fossum Invitational with a 247 (79-81-87) and tied for 47th at the MAC Championships with a 251 (83-85-83).
In her second season with the Eagles, Lawson competed in 20 rounds for the Green and White with an average of 82.85. Her best showing of the season came at the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational, Oct. 22-23, where she shot 11-over-par en route to a 31st-place finish.
Connelly, who carries a 3.86 GPA in general business, played in 20 rounds, recording an average of 80.70. After being limited to just two tournaments in the fall due to injury, she tied for fifth at the Rio Verde Invitational with a two-day tally of 223 (77-75-71). Connelly also tied for 28th at the Kzoo Classic with a 251 (85-81-85) and finished 35th at the MAC Championships with a 243 (82-77-84).
Sripatrprasite turned in a solid freshman campaign for EMU, as she played in all 26 rounds and boasted an average score of 78.88. The Thailand native paced the Eagles at the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational, carding a three-round 226 (75-76-75) to finish tied for fifth at 10-over-par. Her strong season came to a close at the MAC Championships, where she posted a 20th-place finish, the third highest of any Eagle.
Beck, who carries a 3.61 GPA in psychology, played in 23 rounds this season, posting an average of 77.39. She led the team in scoring average and rounds of par-or-better. Overall, Beck had one top-five showing and five top-20 appearances. She fired a 75 in the final round of the Kzoo Classic, Oct. 2-3, to earn a share of medalist honors with a 224 (78-71-75) before falling in a playoff. Additionally, she was 13th at the MAC Championship with a 229 (74-76-79) and joined Stephany Fleet (2006-09) as the only student-athletes in program history to finish inside the top-15 in all four MAC Tournaments they competed in.
