Each meet spans from Thursday-Saturday, April 26-28
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team heads into another action-packed weekend which includes the Hillsdale Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. and the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. Thursday-Saturday, April 26-28.
The Eagles are no strangers to either of the upcoming contests, having been regular competitors in the prestigious late-season meets since their inceptions. Most recently, the Green and White sent student-athletes to both meets last season and saw exceptional performances over a multitude of different events.
The first day of the Penn Relays saw a few distance runners fight through wet weather conditions to finish with strong performances. Former student-athlete Willy Fink paced the first-day competitors with a second-place finish in the 5000m run with a time of 13:54.85. Redshirt senior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) also came away with an impressive time in the 10000m, finishing with a personal best time of 30:10.55 to place sixth. Also turning in a great performance was redshirt senior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge), who raced to a then-personal best time of 8:59.83 in the 3000m steeplechase.
Andresson will once again compete in the 3000m steeplchase, but will head into the event with an updated PR of 8:54.75.
In last season's Gina Relays, EMU had 11 performances serve as personal-records. In the first day of action, redshirt senior Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio-Defiance) came away with a strong 10000m performance, placing third with a time of 30:10.09, which still stands as the best time of his career to date. The next day saw the Green and White capture four event titles, two of which came from senior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio-Hudson (Youngstown State)). Antonio finished the 100m with a time of 10.53 to earn his first gold medal of the day, before turning in a time of 21.28 in the 200m for his second title. Furthermore, both of those times still serve as Antonio's all-time best marks.
Adding to Eastern's titles were junior Micah Peters (York, Ontario-Vaughn Road Academy), who placed first in the triple jump with a distance of 13.99m, and junior Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) who marked a distance of 51.40 in the discus to round out EMU's first-place finishes.
Action at the Hillsdale Gina Relays begins Thursday beginning at 3 p.m. with combined events, which will be followed with the start of running events at 6 p.m. Friday's competition gets kicked off with the finishing of multis at 9 a.m., before the start of field events at noon. The Gina Relays will round out Saturday, beginning with the field events at 10 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m. Fans have the opportunity to follow along via live results, which will be provided as we get closer to the start of the meet, or by watching a live stream by clicking here.
The Penn Relays will also commence Thursday, with field events beginning at 9 a.m. and running events starting at 10 a.m. Day two of the relays also begins at 9 a.m. with both running and field events starting simultaneously. Saturday's action will start bright and early with a 7 a.m. Olympic Development Men's 5k Racewalk.
