Pierre's 1-Meter Title Highlights Second Day of MAC Championships

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – A title in the 1-meter dive highlighted the second night of competition at the Mid-American Conference Championships Thursday, March 1, inside the Nixon Aquatic Center for the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team. The Eagles currently sit in second-place with 283 points, trailing Missouri State University (298.5), while ahead of Miami University (264).
Freshman Al'x Pierre (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) was Eastern's top finisher of the night, as he won the 1-meter diving MAC title with a career-best score of 352.95. With his total, Pierre registered the highest mark on the 1-meter for the Green and White this season. Following right behind him was senior Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central), who took second with a career-best score of 342.55.
EMU continued to shine on the springboard with three more top-finishes. Sophomore Noah Galluzzo (Mexico, N.Y.) and junior Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) both earned spots in the top-five. Galluzzo took fourth with a final score of 315.65, while Gillis was fifth at 309.80. Freshman Jacob Lowe (Brunswick, Ohio) concluded the night with an impressive score in 12th at 235.5.
Four Eagles in the 500 freestyle kicked off the pool portion of the night for the Green and White. Sophomore Tanner Olmos (Clovis, Calif.-Buchanan) was the lone Eagle in the championship heat, as he tied for seventh-place with a time of 4:30.75. Junior JF Murphy (Montreal, Quebec-Sainte-Anne) and sophomores Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy Center) and Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) all racked up points for the Green and White in the consolation heat. Arietta turned in a career-best time of 4:30.34 to take 12th, while Murphy and Saladin took 13th and 15th, respectively.
In the 200 individual medley, a pair of juniors paved the way for Eastern Michigan. Juniors Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) and Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) turned in impressive times to land in the top-five. Kawaguchi clocked a career-best time of 1:46.87, good for third, while Tyson used a season-best time of 1:47.35 to close out the top-five in fifth-place. Freshman Ben Brooks (Avon, Ohio-Avon) had an outstanding showing as he was the top finisher in the 'B' finals at 1:48.63. Junior Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wis.-Greenfield) and sophomore Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) also earned points for EMU as they took 12th and 13th, respectively.
Competing in their first MAC Championships, freshmen Carter Swift (Shepparton, Victoria, Australia) and Chris O'Shea (Miller Place, N.Y.-Rocky Points) had incredible races in the 50 free as the pair snagged two of the top-five places. Swift was Eastern's top finisher with a blistering time of 19.98 to take second. Close behind him was O'Shea, who touched in at 20.28 for fourth-place.
The Eagles closed out the night session with a third-place finish in the 200 free relay. A cohort of Swift, O'Shea, freshman Alec Hoch (Orchard Park, N.Y.-Orchard Park) and Tyson shaved over a full second from their seeding time to clock the fastest-time this season.
Eastern returns to the pool for the third day of action, March 2, with prelims starting at 10:30 a.m.
