Delaney Duncan and Nicole Swartz secured MAC Championship titles
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Two Mid-American Conference champions highlighted the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team's third day of competition at the MAC Championships Friday, Feb. 23. The Eagles wrapped up the night with a MAC title in the 400 individual medley and 100 breastroke. Eastern currently sits in second-place overall with 363.5 points.
Junior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) started the night off strong, winning the 400 IM with a career-best time of 4:14.08. Swartz now owns the fastest time in program's history, beating Briana Emig's time by almost two full seconds.
Junior Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) defended her 100 breast MAC champion title with a record-breaking performance. Duncan, touching in at 58.37, broke her previous record that she set during the morning preliminary session by nearly five-tenths of second. No competitor could come close to the Galesburg, Ill.-native as she touched in almost 3 full seconds ahead of the runner-up.
The Green and White continued to tack on points in the 100 butterfly where juniors Michal Liberman (Rash Haayin, Israel-Begin) and Emilie Desnoyers (St. Albert, Alberta) tied for 10th-place with a time of 55.50.
Sophomore Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline) kept things rolling, posting Eastern's third-consecutive top-10 finish of the night. Armstrong-Grant locked up an eighth-place finish with a time of 1:50.83. Freshman Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) earned some points for Eastern as she tied a Buffalo swimmer for 14th-place.
Eastern shined in the 100 backstroke where sophomores Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) and Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-ward Melville) snagged a pair of top-three finishes. Young locked up a second-place finish with a career-best time of 53.47, while Gavigan followed right on her heels at 54.17, goof for third. The pair now own the second and third fastest time in the EMU record book.
The 400 medley relay team of Young, Duncan, Desnoyers, and senior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.-Landstown) claimed second-place with a time of 3:39.45.
