BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - With the regular season in the rearview mirror, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team sets its sights on the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship, Feb. 23-24, in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Green and White look to once again stand atop the podium after finishing runner-up in the last three indoor championships.
In last year's competition, EMU came out with an impressive start, earning 38 points to end day one in first place. The day was highlighted by the 5000m squad sweeping the top-three finishes, which was led by Willy Fink who crossed the finish line in 14:28.38. However, all three Eagles crossed within four tenths of a second from one another, as current redshirt seniors Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) and Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason) placed second and third with times of 14:28.58 and 14:28.74, respectively. Additionally, the first day of action saw then-sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio-Bishop Hartley) earn bronze in the long jump with a former career-best distance of 7.37m, before taking the high jump title in the second day of action with a career-best height of 2.18m.
Along with Hart's outstanding performance, the second day saw two more podium sweeps by EMU, both of which were led by Fink, as he paced the mile and 3000m run squads. For his efforts, Fink earned Most Valuable Performer, joining then-freshman Ivan Suazo (Columbus, Ohio-Westland) in the post-meet award ceremonies, as Suazo captured MAC Freshman of the Year. Although EMU earned four event titles and saw eight student-athletes earn All-MAC honors, the Green and White was ultimately surpassed by Akron for the conference title.
With that being said, Eastern returns much of its talent from last season and brings back All-American redshirt senior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay), who did not compete in 2017. The Findlay, Ohio native has not skipped a beat in his return, as he ended this year's regular season with the conference's top-time in the 400m, the fourth-best time in the 200m, and fifth-best distance in the long jump. Alongside Brown in the sprints crew is freshman Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England), who emerged as one of the top sprinters in the conference after some incredible performances throughout his debut season. Richardson currently holds the second-best time in the 200m after he crossed the finish line in 21.34 at the SVSU "Doug Hansen" Open, Jan. 19, which tied the 10th-fastest time in EMU's record book. Additionally, he ranks fourth in the 400m and was a member of the 4x400 relay crew that set a new EMU all-time record of 3:08.06 in the Alex Wilson Invite, Feb. 17.
Another freshman that has had an incredible first campaign is Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf). The Ottawa, Ontario native ran to an impressive 4:02.77 mile time at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 2, to notch the fastest mile time in the conference this season and earn a spot in EMU's top-10 all-time for the event. He also currently holds the second-best mark in the 800m and fourth-best time in the 3000m. However, Day is just one piece of an impressive distance/mid-distance unit though, as EMU has at least two representatives inside the conference's top-three performances for the 800m, mile, 3000m, and 5000m. Additionally, Eastern holds the top-five rankings in the 3000m, paced by redshirt senior Hlynur Andresson's (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge) time of 8:02.08, which comes in at sixth all-time in EMU laurels.
The 60m hurdles crew also has two Eagles inside the MAC's top-three marks, with Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) and Suazo ranking first and third, respectively. Furthermore, Eastern has at least one member in the top-five for each field event, with our highest rankings coming in the pole vault and triple jump, as sophomore Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio-Edgerton) and junior Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) each rank third, respectively.
The MAC Indoor Championships are slated to begin Friday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. starting with the heptathlon 60m dash. Running events are scheduled to commence at 2:30 p.m. with the 60m hurdle preliminaries. Competition continues Saturday, Feb. 24, as the day opens with the heptathlon 60m hurdles at 10 a.m. Running events will take place in the afternoon, beginning at 1:30 p.m. with the men's mile run.
