MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University softball team opened the 2018 season by dropping a pair of games on the first day of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational Friday, Feb. 16. The Eagles (0-2) surrendered 14 walks in a 12-0 loss to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (3-4), before falling just short against George Mason University (1-1) in a ninth-inning thriller.

Game #1: Eastern Michigan 0, UMKC 12
Eastern's offense struggled to connect early on as its two hits came in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and senior Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) had back-to-back knocks to load the bases in a comeback attempt with just one out. EMU's rally was thwarted after the Roos buckled down to get the next two outs to cap the game at five innings.

Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Cali.-California) came away with the loss in the circle, as six walks chased her from the game after a combined one inning of work. Freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) and junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) made appearances in relief. Hurley, in her EMU debut, went 1.1 innings, while Miranda tossed the final 2.2. Miranda, who inherited the bases loaded, gave up a home run that gave UMKC a 12-0 lead. Grinding down, the junior gave up no more hits and struck out three batters.

Game #2: Eastern Michigan 1, George Mason 2
Getting right back on the field for game two, Eastern experienced a different game as the Eagles and Patriots were at a dead-lock throughout the first seven innings.

Using the international tie-breaker in which a batter is placed on second base at the start of each extra inning, Eastern scored its first run of the day thanks to a sacrifice bunt and a single to left field in the eight. However, George Mason came right back with its own run to even the score up at one.

The Eagles placed freshman Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood) on second to start the ninth, who was advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt. With just one out, Eastern was in a prime scoring opportunity, but ultimately it could not jump on moment as the freshman was stranded at third with back-to-back outs.

The Patriots mimicked the Eagles with a sacrifice bunt to advance their runner to third, but a centerfield hit allowed its runner to score, ending the game.

Miranda earned the nod in EMU's second game, pitching a career-high 8.1 innings. The Wilmington, Calif. native tossed four strikeouts, while giving up three hits.

The Green and White return to action tomorrow, Feb. 17, when it goes head-to-head against Monmouth University at 6:30 p.m.
