Softball Downed in Ninth Inning Thriller

2/17/2018 11:28:00 PM | Softball

This was the second consecutive extra innings game for Eastern

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla (EMUEagles.com) – In its second consecutive extra-inning game, the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a 6-5 decision against Monmouth University Saturday, Feb 17, at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational.

Senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) paced the Eagles' (0-3) offensive efforts. Hostetler went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. The New Haven, Ind. native pounded out two doubles throughout the nine inning affair. Junior Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) also notched two hits in three at bats, while registering an RBI and run.

Junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) earned the starting nod and throughout five innings of work, tossed seven strikeouts while walking two Hawks. Freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) made an appearance throughout the game while senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) closed the final 3.2 innings.Trujillo picked up the loss as she gave up two runs, while striking out three, moving her to 0-2 on the season.

Down 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, EMU erupted for a three-run frame to even the score. Hostetler set the pace with a left field double on the opening pitch before junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) followed up shortly after with one her own, allowing Hostetler to score. Back-to-back wild pitches would then bring freshman Casey Skeens (Poca, W. Va.-Poca) and Akles across the plate to tie the game.

With the score still locked at 4-4 after the seventh, the international tie breaker rule was enforced where each team placed a runner on second at the start of each inning. Monmouth used the opportunity to regain the lead, 5-4.

Eastern utilized Saporito on second and she quickly advanced to third on a wild pitch before being brought home on the next pitch after Hostetler hit her second double of the night to left field. With three on and two outs, the Eagles had the opportunity to take the win but could not deliver in the ninth.

Monmouth notched another run in the ninth, the Green and White were halted in its scoring attempt by a sacrifice bunt and ground out double-play.

The Eagles return to the field on Sunday, Feb. 18, when they go head-to-head against Virginia at 9 a.m. before facing Georgia Southern at 11 a.m.
