Eastern stranded 12 total runners on base

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team continued to struggle to find its rhythm at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational, as it was bested in another pair of games Sunday, Feb. 18. The Eagles (0-5) dropped a 6-0 decision against the University of Virginia, before falling to Georgia Southern University, 5-0.

GAME 1: Eastern Michigan 0, Virginia 6

Against the Cavaliers (4-6), the Eagles struggled to break through as they stranded seven runners. Sophomore Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern Commerce) paced Eastern at the plate where she went 2-for-3, while senior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) and juniors Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) and Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) each recorded one hit.

In the circle, freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) earned her first start donning the Green and White and was the pitcher on record as she moves to 0-1 on the season. Through 1.2 innings of work, Hurley gave up Virginia's six runs on five hits, including a second inning grand slam and a two-run homerun. Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) was called in from the bullpen where she tossed the remaining 4.1 innings, giving up four hits.

GAME 2: Eastern Michigan 0, Georgia Southern 5

Eastern Michigan continued to have trouble finding its stride as it was held scoreless for the second consecutive game. Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra Calif.-La Habra) had a successful game at the plate where she went 2-for-3, while Saporito and Chretien each tacked on a hit.

Junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) started the game on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out two. Trujillo came in through the fourth frame and finished the game with three strikeouts.

The Green and White had a handful of scoring opportunities throughout the afternoon but could not capitalize on them as the Eagles left five runners on base.

Eastern Michigan returns to action Friday, Feb. 23, for the second weekend of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Eagles will first face Rhode Island at 9 a.m. before going head-to-head with Manhattan at 11:30 a.m.
