ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team began their 2018-19 campaign, Friday, Dec. 7, at the GVSU Holiday Open in Allendale, Mich. The Eagles saw success in their first meet of the season, as both seniors Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) and Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) opened up the season with two of the best performances seen in Eastern Michigan track and field history.

Harkey's throw of 19.74 meters, good for first-place, marked the fourth-furthest weight throw in program history. The Huron, Ohio native also recorded his career-best shot put throw at the event, clearing 15.69m (51-05.75), good for sixth place. Underwood's 300m first-place finish of 33.65 is the second-fastest time ever run by an Eastern Michigan student-athlete. Underwood's time is also the second-best recorded in the NCAA so far this season.

"Our coaches and athletes learned some things today that can be built on," head coach John Goodridge said. "Our day was certainly highlighted by Tyler Underwood and Zach Harkey's performances, making their mark in the Eastern Michigan record books. The day's results are very promising for an early December competition."

Also seeing success today was sophomore Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf), who in his first 1000m run in collegiate competition earned the first event title of the day for EMU, running in at just 2:29.10. In fact, EMU runners all earned top-10 finishes in the 1000m. Sophomore Hayelom Fitsum (Denver, Colorado-Denver School of Science and Technology) ran in just three seconds behind Day, finishing in 2:32.89, while sophomore Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln), and freshmen Craig Thompson (South Haven, Mich.-South Haven) and Joe Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson), earned fifth, sixth, and tenth-place finishes, respectively.

Overall, the Eagles secured three event titles and nine top-three finishes. Both seniors Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio-Bishop Hartley) and Micah Peters (York, Ontario-Vaughn Road Academy) secured podium finishes in the jumps, as Hart cleared 2.04m in the high jump, good for second place, while Peters' triple jump distance of 14.40m earned him third overall. Junior Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio-Edgerton) led the way for the Eagles on the pole vault, clearing 4.45m, claiming third place.  Sophomores Derek Jones (Erie, Pa.-Cathedral Preparatory) and Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) both began their second season of collegiate competition with top-3 finishes, Jones in the 600m with a second-place career-best time of 1:21.37, and Stephenson with an 18.35m Weight Throw, good for third place, respectively.

The Green and White will have a long break from competition through the new year. EMU will continue indoor competition when they travel to nearby Ann Arbor to compete in the Wolverine Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan, Jan. 12, 2019.
