Four Women's Cross Country Student-Athletes Named Academic All-MAC

Cizmas and Meyers earn the honor for the third time
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The 2018 Mid-American Conference Champion Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team placed four student-athletes on the Academic All-MAC team, the league announced Thursday, Dec. 6. A total of 79 student-athletes were named to this year's women's team.
The Academic All-MAC honor recognizes student-athletes who excel in both athletics and in academics. To qualify, student-athletes must have a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and run in at least 50 percent of contests.
Receiving the honor for the Eagles were: sophomores Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead) and Ashleigh Simonis (Cape Town, South Africa-Milnerton), senior captain Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community), and redshirt senior captain Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Township, Mich.-Chippewa Valley).
Distelrath, an intended exercise science major with a 3.65 GPA, participated in seven races for the Green and White this season. The Fort Wayne, Ind. native opened her sophomore campaign registering the best EMU finish at the Toledo Rockets Invitational, placing third overall. Distelrath continued her success throughout the season as she earned the fourth-best Eagles' time at the MAC Championship, finishing 18th with a personal best 6k time of 21:40.3. The sophmore closed out the season with a 64th place finish at the NCAA Division I Great Lakes Regionals, crossing the finish line at 21:56.7.
An intended mechanical engineering major with a 3.83 GPA, Simonis had a breakout second collegiate season, competing in seven meets for the Eagles. She gathered the second-best Eagles' finish at the Toledo Rockets Invitational, finishing with a time of 14:38.2, good for a tenth place finish. Simonis also placing seventh-overall at the George Dales Invitational. The Cape Town, South Africa native rounded out the Eagles' top-five finishers at the 2018 MAC Championship as the Eagles recorded their fourth-straight MAC Championship, earning a 40th place finish with a time of 22:24.1.
Captain and two-time MAC runner of the Week, Meyers earns her third placement on the Cross Country Academic All-MAC squad in her collegiate career. The marketing major from Zionsville, Ind. holds a team best 3.90 GPA, while performing in six of eight of the Eagles' 2018 meets. She notched a 14th place finish at the prestigious Joe Piane Invitational, finishing with a time of 17:09.5, followed by the second-best Eagles' finish at Pre-Nationals, running a time of 20:48.5, good for 21st place. Myers continued her senior campaign with a fourth-place finish at the 2018 MAC Championships with a time of 20:44.9, the second-best time for the MAC Champion team. She was one of two Eagles to qualify for the NCAA Championships, as she recorded a 10th-place overall finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship. The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week (Nov. 14) earned all-region honors with her NCAA Regional Championship placement, and closed out her time in the Green and White with a 75th-place finish at the NCAA Championship.
Fellow captain and three-time member of the Academic All-MAC Team Cizmas is an exercise science major with a 3.72 GPA. The First Team All-MAC honoree began her final season placing 22nd overall at the Joe Piane Invitational, running in at 17:21.1, and soon after led the Eagles at Pre-Nationals with a 20th place finish. The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week (Oct. 31) awardee paced the entire conference with a first-place finish at the MAC Championship, leading the Eagles as they earned their fourth straight MAC Championship. She qualified for the 2018 NCAA Championships with a 15th-place finish at the Great Lakes Regional, good for all-region honors, ending her career in the Green and White with a 74th-place finish at the NCAA Championship.
