– The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team maintained its perfect start to the 2018-19 campaign with a gritty 50-41 victory over Illinois State University, Saturday, Nov. 17, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles (2-0) knocked the Redbirds (1-2) off their perch for the first time after dropping the previous four head-to-head meetings.

Sophomore Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton) paced the Green and White with 16 points and tied for the team-lead with a pair of blocks, while redshirt senior Danielle Minott (Miami, Fla.-Miami Country Day (Syracuse)) added 13 points, eight rebounds, and a team-best three steals. Sophomore Juanita Agosto, (Seattle Wa.-Garfield) logged six points and seven boards and redshirt senior Lorraine Enaubulele (Ajax, Ontario, Canada-Notre Dame) dominated in the post with a career-best 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.

Though the Eagles finished 29.8 percent (17-for-57) from the floor, Illinois State was held to a 28.6 percent (16-for-56) efficiency and went 5-for-14 from the charity stripe. The Green and White capitalized on 17 Illinois State turnovers and out-rebounded the visitors by a 48-39 margin.

EMU did all of its damage in the paint during the opening quarter, pulling down seven offensive rebounds in a light-scoring frame. Both teams were kept off the board until Illinois State opened the scoring with 6:47 left in the first, but Lewis and Agosto responded with layups to stake the Eagles to a 4-2 lead with 4:24 to play in the period. Trailing 6-4 in the waning moments of the first, Enabulele connected on a layup to knot the score at six before Agosto's fast break with 34 seconds remaining put the Green and White back in front, 8-6.

The Eagles' defense continued into stifle Illinois State for much of the second stanza, keeping the visitors off the board for a 9:54 span. While the Redbirds' scoring drought persisted, triples from Minott and Lewis bookended an 8-0 EMU run to extend the Green and White's lead to 16-6 with 3:41 to go in the first half.

Coming out of the break with an 18-14 edge, the Eagles started the second half with a 9-0 run lasting over three minutes to restore their double-digit cushion. After Minott sank a pair of free throws, Lewis connected from beyond the arc to open up a 23-14 lead with 8:46 left in the third. EMU continued to carry the play, as freshman Kiara Johnson (Buffalo, N.Y.–Cardinal O'Hara) made her lone field goal of the afternoon, before redshirt sophomore Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) knocked down both attempts from the line to make it a 27-14 contest with 7:18 to go in the period.

Ahead by nine early in the final stanza, the highlight of the game arrived when Minott buried a corner three and sank the ensuing free throw to complete a four-point play, giving the Green and White a commanding 42-29 advantage with 8:02 on the clock. The Redbirds trimmed the deficit to as little as eight, but the result was never in doubt as the Eagles secured a 50-41 win.

Eastern Michigan hops across the border Wednesday, Nov. 21, for a midweek tilt against Iowa State University. The game, which will be played in Chatham, Ontario, Canada, will tip off at 6 p.m.
