Cardwell's Offensive Fury Not Enough Against Cyclones in Canada

11/21/2018 9:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Redshirt sophomore Corrione Cardwell recorded a career-high 25 points

CHATHAM- KENT, Ontario, Canada (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team could not find a rhythm, as it fell to Preseason WNIT Champion Iowa State University in a neutral site contest at the St. Clair College Health Plex Wednesday night, Nov. 21. Eastern (2-1) kept it tight early on before a fourth quarter push came up short, 85-59, in front of a sold out crowd.

Redshirt sophomore Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio- New Tech East) put together a career-night, as she led the Eagles with career-best 25 points on 11-of-23 shooting. Cardwell also contributed seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals in a well-rounded effort. Sophomore Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.- Belton) chipped 17 points, three rebounds, and two steals, while sophomore Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wash.-Garfield) and freshman Natalia Pineda (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson) added seven points apiece.

As a team, Eastern shot at a 31.4 percent clip, finishing the night 22-of-70 from the floor. Meanwhile Iowa State knocked down 31-of-62 attempts, including 11 triples and all 12 of its free throws. EMU's up-tempo defense forced 22 Cyclone turnovers, highlighted by 11 steals by the Eagles. ISU won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding EMU, 44-36.

Iowa State (5-0) got out to a quick start, pushing ahead by as many as seven in the opening frame but EMU cut the deficit down to three, 20-17, with three minutes to go. The Cyclones closed out the period with a pair of free throws to take a 24-19 edge into the second quarter.

Feeding off the play of their defense, a Lewis layup in transition trimmed ISU's advantage to one with eight minutes to go. From there, Iowa State closed out the half on a 13-6 run to take an eight-point lead into the break.

The Green and White could not match the whirlwind of the Cyclones as Iowa State pushed ahead using a 14-2 run to send EMU home with its first loss of the season.

The Eagles heads back to the Convocation Center to take on the University of Illinois-Chicago, Tuesday, Nov. 27, with tipoff scheduled at 11 a.m.
