Three Eagles posted double-digit scoring efforts
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team hosted Michigan Tech University in exhibition action, Thursday night, Nov. 1, in the Convocation Center. Three Eagles reached double-figures in scoring, but hot-shooting by the Huskies downed Eastern, 66-61.
The Green and White was led by redshirt sophomore Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East), who paced EMU with a team-high 17 points, balanced by sophomore guard Juanita Agosto's (Seattle, Wash.-Garfield) 14 points and freshman Natalie Pineda's (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson) 10 points. Defensively, sophomore center Autumn Hudson's (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) six rebounds led the Eagles, while freshman Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) added five boards.
The Eagles outperformed the Huskies in free throw percentage (75.0 to 67.7), three-point percentage (34.0 to 18.4) and offensive rebounds, but it was Michigan Tech's field goal percentage advantage (53.2 to 31.3) that sealed Eastern's fate. EMU's stout defense forced MTU into 25 turnovers, while Eastern committed 15 itself.
A slow offensive first quarter for the Eagles was thwarted by two strong, 20+ point efforts by Eastern in the second and third periods, leaving the game tied after three quarters of play. Eastern Michigan was able to take the early in the fourth quarter, as Agosto and Minott scored a quick five points to secure a 53-52 lead with 5:08 left to play. The Huskies went on a seven-point run, taking the lead to 59-53, but Eastern fought back with two triples from Cardwell and Annecchiarico to bring the score to 60-59. From there, the Huskies closed it out at the line as EMU fell, 66-61.
Eastern opens up regular season play against the Cleveland State University, Friday, Nov. 9, at approximately 1:30 p.m in the Convocation Center. The season opener is part of an Eastern Michigan basketball doubleheader, as the men's team starts the day at 11 a.m. with a meeting against Drexel University.
