YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
A balanced all-around effort led the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team to a season-opening win over Cleveland State University Friday afternoon, Nov. 9, inside the Convocation Center. EMU (1-0) trailed by as many as 12, but a trio of double-digit performances and gritty defense led the Eagles to the 69-63 win over the Vikings (1-1).

Sophomore Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo. – Belton) led the Eagles with 20 points, after shooting an 8-of-11 from the floor, highlighted by a 4-of-5 effort beyond the arc. Redshirt sophomore Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio – New Tech East) contributed with 14 points, four steals, and four rebounds, while redshirt senior Lorraine Enabulele (Ajax, Ontario, Canada-Notre Dame (Kansas)) added 11 points and four boards. Redshirt senior Danielle Minott (Miami, Fla.-Miami Country Day (Syracuse)) also filled up the box score, flirting with a triple-double, as she finished with a team-high 10 rebounds, seven assists, six points, and four steals.

Eastern Michigan's offense was too much for Cleveland State to handle as EMU shot 43.8 percent from the field compared to CSU's 35.3 percent clip. The Eagles hot-shooting extended to the three-point line, where Eastern knocked down 6-of-17 attempts to Cleveland State's two triples on 12 tries.

Defensively, EMU turned CSU over 21 times, while committing 17 turnovers itself, while the Vikings held a 42-36 edge on the glass.

Cleveland State led by as many as 12 in the first half, but a buzzer-beating triple by Cardwell cut CSU's lead to three, 36-33, into halftime and completely shifted the momentum of the game. Cardwell's three-pointer capped a seven-point quarter for the Cleveland, Ohio native that fueled EMU's comeback in the early goings.

With momentum on their side, the Eagles came out of halftime and leveled the score at 36 all on a Lewis three-pointer. From there, they went on to take a 53-40 lead and never looked back.

The Vikings pulled within four early in the final stanza, but the Eagles held strong for a 69-63 victory.

The Eagles are back in action against Illinois State University, Saturday, Nov. 17, inside the Convocation Center in another doubleheader with the EMU men's basketball team. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
