TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team placed seventh at the Mid-American Conference Championships held in Toledo, Ohio Saturday, Oct. 27. EMU concluded the meet with a team score of 157 points.
"Our youth is not an excuse today," said EMU Head Coach John Goodridge. "We need to learn from this and work to improve."
Leading the way for Eastern was junior captain Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckey), who placed 19th with a time of 25:14.40. On the heels of Wicker was freshman Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington), as Payne crossed in 25:15.77 to claim 20th. Additionally, Payne's placement was the highest of any freshman in the field of competitors, warranting him MAC Freshman of the Year honors. This makes it back-to-back years EMU has won the award, after sophomore Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) claimed the title last season.
Freshman Eddie Zeurcher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River) notched a 31st-place finish, clocking in at 25:35.39. Furthermore, freshman Baldvin Magnusson (Hull, England-Hull University) and sophomore Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln) rounded out Eastern's scoring harriers, as the two finished back-to-back in 47th and 48th, marking times of 25:57.09 and 25:58.23, respectively.
The Green and White will have a week of rest but will kick back into action for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Friday, Nov. 9, in Terre Haute, Ind.
