Eastern secured its 24th consecutive dual win over the Cardinals with the victory
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team returned to the pool after a six-week hiatus with a dominating 149-121 win over Mid-American Conference foe, Ball State University Saturday, Jan. 13. Winning almost every event of the meet, the Eagles secured its 24th consecutive dual win over the Cardinals, while moving to 4-1 on the season in duals.
The Eagles started the meet off with a sweep of the top three spots in the 200 Medley Relay. The cohort consisting of junior Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wisc.-Greenfield), sophomores Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev) and Matthew Martin (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights), and freshman Alec Hoch (Orchard Park, N.Y.-Orchard Park) bested the pool with a time of 1:34.79.
Transitioning to the individual portion of the meet, senior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) nabbed first place in the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 9:46.38. Racing in the event for the first time since last year against Ball State, Jan. 16, Burton now owns the ninth fastest 1000 free time in the conference and second fastest for EMU this season.
In the 200 free, Eastern took the top two spots thanks to juniors Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) and JF Murphy (Montreal, Quebec-Sainte-Anne). Tyson took first with a time of 1:44.14 while Murphy finished right on his heals at 1:45.69.
The Green and White kept the winning streak alive in the 100 backstroke as Eastern saw its second sweep of the day. Sophomore Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) headed the sweep, clocking in at 50.86. Perez and freshman Chris O'Shea (Miller Place, N.Y.-Rocky Points) took second and third, respectively.
Well ahead in the team standings, Eastern deferred points from this point with the exception of first-place finishes.
Tsenkov returned to the pool for the 100 breaststroke to claim first at 58.50 before sophomore Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) took the top spot in the 200 butterfly at 1:51.22.
Swimming in the 50 free for the first time since the 2015 MAC Championships, Burton earned his second event win of the day with a time of 21.64. Hoch and junior Maxwell Wilkinson (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) finished right behind Burton at 21.94 and 22.30, respectively.
On the springboard, EMU continued to dominate as sophomore Noah Galluzzo (Mexico, N.Y.) used a season-best score of 321.45 to earn first on the 3-meter while also notching a season-best score of 308.63 on the 1-meter. Senior Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) claimed the top-spot on the 1-meter with a season-best score of 325.65.
As action returned back to the swimming events, the Green and White expanded its winning streak to 10 as Tyson and Segal both took first-place in the 100 free and 200 back, respectively.
The Eagles had a dominating showing in the 200 breast as Tsenkov, sophomore Aaron Hendry (Evans, Ga.-Evans) and freshman Ben Brooks (Avon, Ohio-Avon) had the three fastest times in the pool. Tsenkov, who earned his second event win of the day, touched in at 2:08.27, almost 12 full seconds ahead of the fastest Cardinal.
EMU remained on fire as its used a pair of first-place finishes in the form of sophomore Jacob Ehrman (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Burton in the 500 free and 100 fly, respectively, to expand its lead to nearly 60 points.
In the final two events of the afternoon, all of Eastern's swimmers competed as exhibition instead of for points. In the 200 individual medley Perez clocked the fastest time in the pool at 1:57.41.
The Eagles concluded the meet with the 200 free relay where the Eagles swam all three cohorts as exhibition to cap the 149-121 victory.
