CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – In his collegiate debut, Eastern Michigan University freshman Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) shot a one-under 71 in the opening round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge Sunday, Sept. 17, on the par 71, 7,086-yard Cedar Rapids Country Club course. The Caledon, Ontario native sits in an eight-way tie for 13th-place following the first day of the tournament hosted by the University of Iowa.
The tournament features 15 teams from 15 different conferences, and receives national exposure through Golfweek Magazine and Golfweek.com.
As a team, the Eagles are in 12th after shooting an 18-hole mark of 294. North Carolina State University leads a narrow team race with a 274. Iowa is nine strokes back at 283 and the University of North Carolina-Wilmington is two back of that at 285. Lipscomb Univesity sits fourth with a one-stroke advantage over a four-way tie for fifth.
Junior Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and senior Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) are tied for 31st overall with a 73. Newcomer Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin) managed a 77 for 59th, while senior Tyler Lewis (Ortonville, Mich.-Brandon-Mott CC) rounded out the lineup with an 81 in 73rd-place.
The second round of action at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge resumes Monday, Sept. 18, with a 9:30 a.m. (CT) tee time off of holes No. 1 and No. 10. Play concludes Tuesday, Sept. 19, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live stats are available at golfstat.com.
