The Eagles defeated Southeast Missouri State 3-0 before falling to host Chicago State, 3-2.

CHICAGO (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern University volleyball team opened its weekend at the Chicago State Tournament with a split of Day One, sweeping Southeast Missouri State (28-26, 25-23, 25-22), 3-0 before falling to host Chicago State (22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 13-15), 3-2 Friday, Sept. 15.

Junior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) reached an impressive milestone with her 26 assists in the Eagles' win over SEMO, eclipsing the 1,500 mark for her career. Adding the 35 assists she amassed in the second match of the day, Rajewski has now climbed into the Eagles' Top 10 all-time list, passing Sandy Burke for 10th all time.

Eastern Michigan (8-7) held Southeast Missouri State to just a .129 attack percentage for the match in the first game, and limited Chicago State to a .182 mark in the second. The win equals the Eagles' total from a season ago, with one non-conference match left on the schedule before Mid-American Conference play.

EMU began its weekend with a sweep over Southeast Missouri State. The Eagles endured a late comeback by the Redhawks for a 28-26 set one victory, and pulled out a 25-23 win in set two. The third set saw Eastern Michigan put together its best performance of the day, hitting .387 in the stanza.

Junior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) led the team with 13 kills in the match, also adding five digs and a block. Freshman Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) chipped in 12 kills of her own and hit .296 for the match. Junior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) turned in a double-digit kill performance as well, finishing with 10.

After falling in the first set, 25-22, Eastern Michigan regained its composure and ran through the Cougars in the next two sets, winning 25-22, 25-18. The Eagles hit a snag in the fourth set, falling 25-18, and then came up just short in the fifth and final set, 15-13.

The first set was even until the midway point, when Chicago State used a 4-0 run that proved crucial to the match. Eastern Michigan was able to pull within a point at 19-18, but never made it over the hump and the hosts took set one, 25-22.

Set two was as evenly matched as the first, but EMU was able to maintain a slim advantage all the way through to the end, winning 25-22. After grabbing the lead at 4-3, the Eagles didn't lose it the rest of the way.

Eastern Michigan came alive after the intermission, jumping ahead to a 5-1 lead and never looking back, holding Chicago State at bay in the third set's entirety. The Eagles utilized two different 3-0 runs late in the set to win, 25-18, and take control of the match at 2-1.

Chicago State returned the favor a set later, pushing the match to the brink thanks to a 25-18 win of their own.

In the first to 15 battle between the squads, Chicago State built a 13-8 lead and had Eastern Michigan on the ropes. The Eagles fought back, however, and forced the Cougars to call both timeouts when the game got back to one point. Ultimately it was CSU who came out on top, taking the final set 15-13.

Strefling set a new career-high in kills with 18, leading the Eagles in the second match. Haut added 11 of her own for a second straight 10+ kill game, and Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) also added 11 kills.

EMU returns to action Saturday, Sept. 16 in a 3 p.m. match against Louisiana Lafayette. The match is the final non-conference game of the season, with the Eagles opening up Mid-American Conference play Friday, Sept. 22 against Ball State in the Convocation Center at 3 p.m.
