EMU fell 20-25, 25-12, 23-25, 16-25

CHICAGO (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan volleyball team fell 3-1 to Louisiana Lafayette (20-25, 25-12, 23-25, 25-16) in its final tune-up for the Mid-American Conference season Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Chicago State Tournament.

Senior Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) led the team with 15 kills against the Ragin' Cajuns, with freshman Franki Strefling (Buchanan, Mich.-Niles) and sophomore Cassie Haut (Monroe,Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) adding  11 and 10 kills respectively. Strefling was named to the All-Tournament team for her play, finishing the weekend with 41 kills and a .253 attack percentage. She also added 23 digs and two service aces.

EMU was battling uphill from the outset of the match, falling behind Louisiana Lafayette 4-0 to start the first set. The Eagles were able to get the match back to just three points towards the end of the set, but ultimately the Ragin' Cajuns came out on top.

After hitting just .130 in the first set, Eastern Michigan bounced back with an eye-popping .500 attack percentage in set two for a dominating 25-12 victory.

The third set saw the Eagles in the lead beyond the midway point, holding a three-point advantage at 17-14. Louisiana Lafayette rattled off four of the next five points and road the momentum to the 25-22 set victory.

Eastern Michigan struggled to get the offense going in the final set, hitting just .079 in set four. Louisiana Lafayette, on the other hand, hit a robust .406 on the way to the 25-16 victory in the match-clinching set.

Both of the Eagles' setters in the match, Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian), finished the match with 20+ assists. Rajewski led the team with 28 and Taylor added 22, marking the first time this season both players eclipsed the 20 assist plateau. Libero Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) added 21 digs.

EMU returns to action Friday, Sept. 22 with its first taste of Mid-American Conference play when it welcomes Ball State to the Convocation Center for a 3 p.m. match.
