EMU Men's Cross Country Tests Underclassmen in First Meet of 2017

DEXTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team began its 2017 season Friday, Sept. 1, at the Michigan Open in Dexter, Mich. The Eagles used the meet as an opportunity to knock off the rust and give some of the underclassmen their first experience in collegiate competition, as nine freshmen got their first taste of Division I action.
The Green and White were led by freshmen Phoenix Myers (Wattsburg, Pa. - Seneca) and Zachary Young (Marion, Ill. - Marion), who placed 15th and 16th with times of 16:31.3 and 16:45.9. respectively. The third Eagle to cross the finish line was senior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich. - Thomas J. Anderson), at 17th in 16:47.5.
Other freshmen who participated in their first collegiate meet, included: Solomon Costa (Columbus, Ohio - Gahanna Lincoln), Ian Cook (Worthington, Ohio - Thomas Worthington), Johnelle Joe (Mount Pleasant, Mich. - Mount Pleasant), Donovan Myers (Wattsburg, Pa. - Seneca), Rhys Grealish (Indianapolis, Ind. - Avon), Derek Jones (Erie, Pa. - Cathedral Preparatory), and Dennis Manyeah (Darby, Pa. - Pennwood).
"We look forward to the next seven weeks of training before we return to this course for the EMU Fall Classic, to see how much we can improve," Head Coach John Goodridge added.
The Eagles pick up again at the Titan Invitational Saturday, Sept. 9, at 11:45 a.m. in Northville, Mich. This marks the fourth consecutive season in which Eastern will participate in the meet.
