Broncos Stun Eagles in Late Inning Loss

4/21/2017 5:24:00 PM | Softball

Four Eagles picked up multi-hit efforts

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team was stunned in a loss to Western Michigan University Friday, April 21, at Varsity Field. The Eagles (15-26, 3-13 MAC) led most of the way until a seventh inning RBI single by the Broncos (17-24, 5-11 MAC) sealed a 3-2 defeat.

Eastern Michigan's bat cranked out nine hits in the game, while Western also registered nine. Four multi-hit efforts paced the balanced offensive day for the Eagles. Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) racked up her 12th multi-hit showing of the season, turning in a 2-for-3 day that included a home run and a double. Junior Haley Hostetler (Woodlan, Ind.-New Haven), and sophomores Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) and Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) added two hits apiece.

Sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) got the ball for the Eagles, going 6.0 innings. Miranda allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out three. Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) came in to pitch the seventh, allowing a run on one hit, as she dropped to 8-15 on the season.

After Miranda worked her way around a pair of walks, the Eagles got to work in their first trip to the plate. With two outs, Kriegshauser roped a double to the fence in left center to bring Logan to the plate. Wasting no time, Logan blooped the first pitch she saw to center, scoring Kriegshauser from second, and giving the Green and White a one run edge, 1-0.

Western Michigan got the run back in the second, capitalizing on a one-out double, to even the score at one through one and a half innings of play.

Leading off the Eagles' half of the third, Kreigshauser hammered a solo shot to left to put the Green and White back in front, 2-1.

The 2-1 score remained into the sixth, where Western's Kelsea Cichocki blasted her seventh home run of the season to knot the score at two.

Western Michigan broke the seventh open with a leadoff double, before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. The Broncos took their first lead of the day on a lightly hit tapper back up the middle, giving WMU the 3-2 advantage.

Saporito got the Eagles going with a leadoff single in the bottom half of the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. In the next at bat, Saporito tagged up and took third on a fly out to center to bring Kriegshauser to the plate with the tying run 60 feet away. The Broncos issued a free pass to Kriegshauser, bringing up Logan, but a strikeout stalled the rally, giving WMU the 3-2 win.

The Eagles and Broncos return to action tomorrow, April 22, to close out the weekend series. The doubleheader begins with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Varsity Field.
