Eastern Unable to Keep Pace with Western

4/22/2017 5:45:00 PM | Softball

The Eagles were out-hit 24-14 on the day

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team could not muster enough offense to keep pace with the hot-hitting Broncos of Western Michigan University, Saturday, April 22. The Green and White were out-hit 24-14 on the day, as the Eagles dropped the doubleheader 7-5 and 13-1.

Game #1: Western Michigan 7, Eastern Michigan 5

Sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) and junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) accounted for six of EMU's 10 hits on the day, as the pair each posted multi-hit efforts. Akles went a whopping 4-for-4 at the plate in her best performance of the season, while Hostetler posted two hits for the second consecutive game. Hostetler finished the day 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Meanwhile, freshman Danielle Rico (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Grand Terrace) recorded a career-high two RBI's in the loss, going 1-for-4 with a double.

Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) got the start, going 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, while her record dropped to 8-16 on the season.

Junior Brandice Olmos' (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) third inning RBI single gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead into the sixth, as Trujillo pitched her way out of a few jams to maintain the slim edge.

In the sixth, however, things changed as the Broncos put up seven runs in the frame to take control, 7-1. A solo shot with one out tied the score at one, before back-to-back singles chased Trujillo from the game. Western Michigan kept things rolling against EMU's relievers, using three singles, three walks, and a hit by pitch to push its advantage to six.

Down by six, the Eagles battled back with a four run frame of their own. Akles singled up the middle, marking the start of four consecutive hits for EMU. After sophomore Olivia Logan's (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) single put two on with nobody out, Rico ripped a two-run double to left center to cut the deficit to four, 7-3. Hostetler kept the ball rolling with an RBI single and a fielder's choice plated one more to make the score, 7-5, heading into the seventh.

EMU kept WMU in check in the top of the seventh, but left a leadoff single stranded in the bottom half of the frame, dropping the game by a final tally of 7-5.

Game #2: Western Michigan 13, Eastern Michigan 1

Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) paced the Green and White in game two, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, as EMU was out-hit, 12-4.

Sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs, four of which were earned, in 1.2 innings of work, while striking out three.

The Broncos' hot hitting carried over to the second game of the doubleheader, as Western pushed three across in the first, four in the fourth, and one in the third to take a 8-1 lead into the fourth.

After a scoreless fourth, WMU tacked on another run in the fourth and exploded for five more in its next turn at bat to take a 13-1 lead into EMU's half of the fifth.
Unable to cut the deficit to less than eight, the Eagles were run-ruled, 13-1.

Eastern Michigan returns to midweek action Tuesday, April 25, when it travels to East Lansing, Mich. for a 4 p.m. clash with the Spartans of Michigan State University.
