The Eastern Michigan University baseball team, behind a complete-game from senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh), won game one of the series opener over Ohio University, 8-2, Friday evening, April 14, at Oestrike Stadium. It was the third complete game by an EMU (14-20, 5-2 MAC) starter this season.

It was the first complete game in Delaplane's EMU career, striking out a career-high 12 Bobcats (16-17, 3-4 MAC) in the process, while not giving up a walk. It was the most K's recorded in a single-game by an EMU pitcher in the modern statistical era (since 1999). Overall, he gave up eight hits and just one earned run, after runs scored on a wild pitch and passed ball. The outing dropped his ERA to a team-low 2.86.

Delaplane got all the run support he needed in the first four innings, as EMU went for seven in the first four. Overall, the Eagles tallied nine hits on the night, led by a three-hit effort from redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)), including a double.

Providing most of the run support was fellow senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)), who launched a three-run homer on his only hit of the night. It was his fourth of the season and 12th of his EMU career. Also tallying multi-RBI games were sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) after they both notched two-RBI singles.

EMU got an early start, tagging the Bobcats for a pair in the second inning. After back-to-back hit batters and a sacrifice bunt, runners stood on second and third for Jones. The freshman notched EMU's first hit of the evening, a single up the middle, to score both and make it 2-0.

The lead doubled in the third with a two-out knock from Lubin. After loading the bases with no outs, Ohio almost got out of a jam with a strikeout and pop out, but Lubin was able to deliver in the clutch with a base hit to right to plate two more and make it 4-0 after three.

The Eagles poured it on in the fourth frame with a three-run bomb from Stidham on a full count and two outs. With runners on after two walks, Stidham's fourth homer of the season to left field blew the doors open with a 7-0 score. Meanwhile, Delaplane cruised through the first four innings with five strikeouts to maintain the shutout.

Ohio broke the shutout in the top of the fifth on a tough run, scoring one on a two-out wild pitch to make it 8-1. EMU had an immediate response though, scoring in their fourth straight inning with some more two-out hitting. After two quick outs, Jones drew a walk and sophomore John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) singled to bring sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), to the plate. The sophomore did his job, singling to right to make it 8-1.

The Bobcats got another to cross in the sixth, this time on a bases loaded passed ball, to put the tally at 8-2, but Delaplane remained steady, getting a fly out to end any more threat. He flew through the seventh, recording his tenth punch out in the process, tying a career-high.

In the eighth, two base runners reached on an error and single, with one away. That's when the defense stepped up, as on a fly ball to center, the runners tried to advance, but Lubin hit the cutoff man, redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw), who was able to tag the runner out at second to end the inning.

Soldiering on into the ninth, Delaplane ended as strong as he'd been all night, going three-up, three-down, including two more strikeouts to set his new career-high, to put a bow on the complete game 8-2 victory.

Eastern returns to the diamond tomorrow afternoon, April 15, for game two of the series against the Bobcats. First pitch from Oestrike Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
