The Eastern Michigan University baseball team split a doubleheader in the series finale against Bowling Green State University, March 25, at Oestrike Stadium with a 3-0 win in game one,  followed by a 6-2 setback in game two. EMU picked up the series win over the Falcons (5-15, 1-2 MAC) to start 2-1 in MAC play, and 6-16 overall.

Game One: Eastern Michigan 3, Bowling Green 0
Game one was all about junior starting pitcher Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) who tossed an absolute gem in a complete game shutout. The righty only allowed five base runners the whole game, including two hits, while striking out six. It was the first complete game of the season for the Eagles, and earned Allen the first win of his EMU career.

Offensively EMU got just enough run support for Allen, getting their three runs on eight hits. They were led by two-hit efforts from senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) and freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline), who each also drove in one. All three of EMU's RBI's came on outs, one via groundout and two via sacrifice fly.

In the first three innings, both teams combined for just three hits and no runs leading to the fourth. Through the first four, Allen allowed just three base runners on a single, error, and hit by pitch, while striking out five.

EMU got the bats going in the bottom of the fourth, breaking the shutout with a run. Stidham and Owings went back-to-back with a single and double to put runners on second and third with one out. Freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) came through, driving home the first run with an RBI groundout making it 1-0 after four.

Allen then went 1-2-3 in the fifth and allowed just a walk, his only of the night, in the sixth to maintain the 1-0 game into the bottom of the sixth. There, EMU cushioned its lead on a sacrifice fly from Owings after back-to-back singles, to take a 2-0 advantage into the final three.

Allen went three up, three down in the seventh and gave up his second hit in the eighth before it was erased on a 5-4-3 double play. Eastern got one more insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Stidham sacrifice fly following a redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-GilbertC.C.)) double and groundout, to give Allen a 3-0 lead into the final frame.

In the final inning, Allen went `1-2-3 for the fifth time on three easy groundouts to complete the complete game victory.

Game Two: Bowling Green 6, Eastern Michigan 2

Eastern was unable to overcome a 6-0 deficit in game two, despite outhitting the Falcons, 8-7, all singles. A four-run sixth inning was enough to be the difference in the series finale defeat.

Leading the Eagle offense in the night cap was sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) who had his first multi-hit and multi-RBI game of the season in a 2-for-3 game, including a walk and two RBI's.

Eastern's bullpen kept the Eagles in the contest, as freshman James Harness (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) and senior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) combined to go the final four innings without giving up a run, yielding just one hit and striking out five.

The first two innings went by without any damage, but BGSU got their first run of the day in the third on an RBI single. The lead jumped to two in the fifth on another bloop single, making it 2-0 midway through.

Things fell apart in the sixth when BGSU capitalized on a bases loaded jam with no outs. Following a walk to bring in a run, a double play ball was mishandled, allowing two more runs to score, and break the game open, 5-0. The sixth and final run was scored later on a safety squeeze, making it 6-0 with four to play.

Eastern did their best to rally, getting a pair in the seventh on a two-RBI single from Schuemann, but the Bowling Green bullpen kept the Eagle bats at bay down the stretch to close out the 6-2 victory.

Eastern returns to play this week, Tuesday, March 28, when they host in-state foe Oakland University. First pitch from Oestrike Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
