EMU led early but couldn't generate the offense it needed
YPISLANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team could not overcome a three-run sixth inning in a 3-2 defeat to Oakland University, Tuesday, March 28 at Oestrike Stadium.
The Eagles (6-17, 2-1 MAC) led 2-0 into the sixth frame before the Golden Grizzlies (3-18, 1-2 Horizon) tagged EMU for three in the sixth and held on for the one-run victory.
EMU's offense was still able to produce seven hits, led by sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), who had his second straight two-hit affair to go along with a stolen base. EMU's runs came off the bat of fellow sophomore John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), who had a two-run single in the third inning. It was his second two-RBI game of the season in just seven appearances.
Junior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic), in the first start of his EMU career, got through the first three without yielding a run. EMU got on the board in the bottom of the third after some patience loaded the bases. A pair of walks and a hit batter led to the bases being loaded with two outs. In the six hole, Rensel delivered with a two-RBI single into right to give EMU a 2-0 lead.
DeVenney started the fourth, but after two runners reached with one out, junior Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shasta (Butte C.C.)) entered from the pen and retired the next two to keep the shutout. He stranded another runner on third in the fifth and the two-run lead held into the home half of the fifth.
Oakland was able to capitalize with runners on second and third with just one out in the sixth, tying the game at two with a two-RBI double. They took the lead one batter later on an RBI single, making it 3-2.
Eastern's bats went mostly cold the rest of the way, except the ninth. There, freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown) notched a two-out single, and after a walk, EMU had runners on first and second with two outs. Despite the threat, Oakland was able to induce a groundout to end the game.
Eastern will return to the diamond this weekend when they travel to the Windy City of Chicago for a four-game series against Chicago State and Butler. Action from CSU's Cougar Stadium will begin Friday, March 31, with a 6 p.m. first pitch against host Chicago State.
