Seven-Run Ninth Powers Eagles to Win over Chicago State

3/31/2017 7:46:00 PM | Baseball

EMU trailed by one before the big inning

CHICAGO (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team used a seven-run ninth inning to storm back and defeat Chicago State University, 10-6, Friday afternoon, March 31, at Cougar Stadium in Chicago.

The Eagles (7-17) used five walks and three hits in the seven-run frame to spurn the Cougars (6-17). In total, the Eagle offense had eight hits and a season-high 11 walks in the victory.

Leading the offensive effort was redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw), who went 2-for-4 for with three runs scored and a career-best three-RBIs. Fellow senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), who entered as a pinch hitter, had a clutch three-RBI double as part of that ninth inning rally, which was the sixth three-RBI effort of his career. Finally, redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) also tacked on a two-hit game with a double and two runs scored.

On the bump, senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) pitched tremendously in a no decision effort, The righty went a career-high seven innings, only allowing three runs, two earned, with a career-best 10 strikeouts. Delaplane's 149 career strikeouts now sits 19th all-time at EMU.

Earning the win in relief was junior Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shasta (Butte C.C.)) after he went the final two innings, striking out a pair. It was his second win on the season.

The Eagles jumped on the Cougars early, getting a 2-0 lead. Peterson got it started with a ground rule double, followed one batter later by a bloop RBI single from Gill to get the scoring started. Gill then went to work, advancing to second on a wild pitch and then stealing third. He would manufacture his own run on a wild pitch, making it 2-0 after one.

Following a scoreless second, CSU was able to tie it up in the third on a pair of hits and an error, making it two-all after three innings. They took their first lead in the fourth on a triple, followed by a single, making it 3-2. Despite the tally, Delaplane had racked up seven strikeouts through four.

After another scoreless frame in the fifth, EMU was able to tie it up in the sixth. Gill led off with a walk and two wild pitches later, he wound up on third. This brought up senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)), who notched an infield RBI single to tie it heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Delaplane kept powering through in the sixth and seventh, getting through both innings to reach a new career high in innings pitched with seven, as well as notching his career-best in strikeouts with 10. Despite his efforts, the tally remained tied into the bottom of the eighth.

There, the Cougars were able to get the lead run on a two-out infield single, making it 4-3 into the last call at the dish for the Eagles.

EMU didn't go quietly though, exploding for the seven-run inning in the ninth to take a six-run advantage. The ninth started with back-to-back walks and a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with no outs. Sophomore Max Schuemann's (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) two-RBI single gave EMU the lead, 5-4. EMU continued to pour it on, as CSU struggled to find the plate, loading the bags up with two outs on two walks.

Gill added some insurance with a two-run double, making it 7-4. After the fifth walk of the inning, Montgomery added the final nail in the coffin with a bases-clearing double in the gap, capping the seven-run frame and making it 10-4 heading into the final Cougar at-bat. CSU tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth, but McMurtrey ultimately closed it out for the 10-6 victory.

The Eagles return to action in Chicago tomorrow, April 1, for a single game against Butler University. First pitch from Cougar Stadium is set for noon.
