The Eagles will honor 10 seniors prior to the meet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team will close out the dual portion of the 2016-17 season Saturday, Feb. 4, when it hosts Miami University in Mid-American Conference action at Jones Natatorium for senior day.
EMU will honor 10 seniors prior to the start of action as Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson), Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park), Chris Buzard (Venetia, Pa.-Peters Township), Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic Secondary), Chris Cutter (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers), Conner Finnigan (Indianapolis, Ind.-Warren Central), Dan Gironza (New Hudson, Mich.-South Lyon), Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.), Kevin Moore (Phoenix, Ariz.-Boulder Creek), and Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4) will be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments over the course of their careers.
The Eagles enter the conference clash on the heels of a road loss to Buffalo, Jan. 28. Falling 161-139, the setback snapped EMU's 72-MAC dual win streak that dated back to the 1997-98 season. Sophomore Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) paced the Eagles, posting his fifth sweep of the backstroke, in addition to claiming second in the 200 Individual Medley. Chan, Lichtenberg, sophomore Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate), and junior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) also picked up wins against the Bulls. Chan posted the MAC's highest score on the 3-meter dive en route to the win, while Lichtenberg added a win in the 1000 Freestyle. Tyson came out victorious in the 200 Free and Burton was the 200 Butterfly winner.
Miami travels to Ypsilanti for its first dual since falling to Buffalo, 177-119, Jan. 21. The RedHawks have struggled in dual action this season, compiling a 2-4 record. MU has relied on the contribution of several underclassmen throughout the season, including freshman Justin Andrews, who is MU's top distance swimmer. Senior Lucas Brock balances out the RedHawks' youth and has been one of the conference's top sprinters this season. Brock ranks inside the MAC's top-10 in both the 50 and 100 Free this year.
EMU seeks its 20th consecutive win over the RedHawks when the two squads battle this weekend. Miami's last win over the Eagles in dual action came back during the 1991-92 season. In that meeting, MU topped EMU, 137-106, before Eastern Michigan got revenge later in the season, winning the MAC Championship.
Competition at Jones Natatorium begins at 1 p.m., while senior day festivities will start at 12:45 p.m. Live results for the meet can be found here, while updates are also available on MeetMobile.
