PORTAGE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University senior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) shot a 75 in the final round of the Kzoo Classic Tuesday, Oct. 3, to earn a share of medalist honors on the par-72, 6,133 yard Moors Golf Club course. Beck (78-71-75) and Bowling Green State University's Erin Fahey (75-71-78) both finished the tournament with total scores of 224.
However, Fahey would eventually win the playoff with a par putt on the first hole to give her the individual title. It marked the fifth top-five showing of her career, and the first time an EMU student-athlete had taken part in a playoff since 2014 at the Cardinal Classic, Sept. 22-23.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) recorded the lowest 54-hole mark of her career with a 236 (79-74-83) to finish 11th. Freshman Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) and junior Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) tied for 24th with a 247.
Sophomore Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) added a final round 85 for a three round tally of 251 (85-81-85). Classmate Katelin Lawson (LaSalle, Ontario-Ridge Community-Tampa) rounded out the scoring with a 256 (87-89-83) in a tie for 36th.
Bowling Green rolled to the team championship with a 915 (305-296-314), 20 strokes ahead of Central Michigan University (935). Host Western Michigan University claimed third with a 937 (307-311-319) followed by Ohio University (315-315-321=951), EMU, and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (324-323-324=971).
Head coach Pina Gentile and the Eagles return to Ypsilanti to make some history with the inaugural Shirley Spork EMU Invitational, Oct. 9-10, at EagleCrest Golf Club.
