EMU improved upon its seed by 14 slots
BOSTON, Mass. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University rowing team competed in the highly-touted 53rd annual Head of the Charles Saturday, Oct. 21, in Boston, Mass. Going against a field of 40 boats, the Green and White overcame a collision to improve upon its seed by 17 places.
"The Charles is such a huge race and rowing experience that it is hard to stay focused your first time here," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "After a pretty rocky and rushed practice session on Friday afternoon we made a lot of adjustments physically and mentally for Saturday's race."
Racing in the women's club eights, the Eagles lone boat placed 17th with a time of 17:47.527. Eastern finished three spots ahead of Colonial Athletic Association foe Villanova, in addition to besting boats from Brown, Holy Cross, Colgate, Lehigh, and Illinois. EMU's 17th-place finish was 17 places higher than its No. 34 seed.
"I was really proud of our racing and the team in the boat," Savage added. "We were really aggressive and made some good movement through a lot of traffic in front of us to get clear, but had a collision under the Elliot Bridge that caused us to fall a few places in the overall. This group of women weren't shaken by the collision and gained back a lot of the lost ground right away. We steered a great course, rowed hard and caught a little hard luck, but that is Head Racing and the Charles. We finished well enough to get a qualification for next year and we are going to keep this a focus on our schedule next year. We get to work to go fast at the Head of the Hooch on Monday."
Eastern Michigan returns to the water, Nov. 4-5, for its final regatta of the fall season when it travels to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Head of the Hooch. Action Saturday, Nov. 4, is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
