Rowing Gains Valuable Experience at Alabama

The Eagles hit the water for the first time since the new year
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team capped its spring break trip with 16 separate 1,000-meter pieces against the University of Alabama Saturday, Feb. 24, on the Black Warrior River. After spending the week training on the water in warmer weather, EMU's trip culminated with the Eagles going head-to-head with the Crimson Tide.
"We raced tough today against a very deep UA team," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "I was very happy with the speed and adjustments in the 1v8. We still have some development needed in the 2v8. The 1v4 made some great changes through the pieces to race tighter with UA. The 2v4 responded well and kept up a great fight for all the pieces. I was happy with all our results, particularly in the 1v8 after a long week of training."
While EMU was unable to claim victory in any of the races, the Eagles gained valuable experience training in the warmer southern climate, as well as racing boats from another school for the first time this spring.
"The races were quick, which means changes had to be made on the fly," redshirt senior Savannah Theisen added. "Our boat was very responsive during the race, while still maintaining aggression."
The Eagles' First Varsity 8+ crew posted EMU's best time of the day in its first 1,000-meter piece, turning in a time of 3:42.9, just one second off UA's top boat. The Green and White bested Alabama's "B" boat, which finished third, by three full seconds.
EMU's performance in the First Varsity 8+ was one of four sub-four-minute times for Eastern Michigan, while it was also one of two races in which EMU beat one of UA's boats. The other occurrence came in the fourth session of the Varsity 8+. There, Eastern crossed the finish line in 3:48.01, edging out Alabama's "B" boat by just over a second.
Eastern Michigan returns home to continue its training before the grind of the spring schedule gets underway Sunday, April 8, at the Cooper Invitational in Pennsauken, N.J.
