The Eagles look to extend their 10-dual winning streak against the Big Red

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team returns to the pool this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 21, when it travels to Ohio to take on Denison University.

The Eagles enter the weekend after going 1-1 last week, defeating Northwestern, 153-141, Oct. 11, before falling to Kentucky, 184-113, Oct. 14. EMU was paced by junior Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) who led the squad with five first-place finishes. After sweeping the backstroke events and adding a top-finish in the 200 individual medley against Northwestern, Kawaguchi nabbed first-place in the 200 back and 400 IM against Kentucky. He also added a second and third-place finish in the 100 and 50 back, respectively. The Cary, N.C. native was named the Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week for his efforts in the pool last week, the leauge announced Thursday, Oct. 19.

Senior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) was another critical competitor for the Green and White going four-for-four. Against Northwestern, Burton swept the butterfly events, before grabbing 18 points against Kentucky in the 100 back and 100 fly. CollegeSwimming.com awarded the Chesapeake, Va. native with the Mid-Major accolade for his dominate performances last week.

Eastern looks to expand its undefeated record against the Big Red after winning the past 10 dual meets since the first match up during the 1997-98 season. Last season, in its home opener, the Green and White rolled past Denison, 191-104, after a balanced effort amongst the squad.

Winning every event but two, the Eagles added sweeps in the 200 medley relay, 200 fly, and the 100 and 200 back. Kawaguchi claimed the top spots in the back events while sophomore Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev) took the breaststroke events. On the springboard, senior Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) added another nine points to the final score after having the top 1-meter dive.

The Eagles' dual against the Big Red is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. in the Trumball Aquatics Center. Live results will be available for the meet here while a live stream can be found here.
