LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEalges.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team traveled to Lexington, Ky., Saturday, Oct. 14, for a non-conference dual against the University of Kentucky. The Eagles came up short, as the Wildcats took the meet by a final score of 184-113.

After a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay, the Eagles struggled to finish top-three in the following events as the Wildcats swept the 1650 and 200 freestyle races.

Senior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) and junior Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) got the Green and White on track with a 1-2 punch in the 100 backstroke. Burton won the race, clocking in with a time of 49.42, while Kawaguchi finished runner-up, touching in at 49.87. Burton also improved to 4-0 on the year in the 100 fly, winning the event with a time of 49.14.

Freshman Ben Brooks (Avon, Ohio, Avon) followed up with a second-place performance in the 100 breaststroke while fellow freshman Ben Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa.-State College Area) was just edged out of the top three with a time of 58.07.

Trailing behind a Wildcat, sophomore Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) posted a second-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.13

Kentucky continued to show its dominance in its pool, sweeping the 50 and 100 free. Freshman Carter Swift (Shepparton, Victoria, Australia) paced EMU in both events posting a fourth and fifth-place finish, respectively.

Kawaguchi nabbed his first top-finish of the afternoon in the 200 back, touching in at 1:48.79. Right on his heels was sophomore Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) who posted a second-place finish at 1:50.38.

Moving to the 200 breast, Gingher continued to have a strong day. Taking the lead early on and never looking back, Gingher touched in at 2:04.78. In a battle for second-place between himself a Wildcat, Brooks was edged out by three hundredths of a second, taking third at 2:05.87.

Kawaguchi, leading the Eagles in their first sweep of the afternoon, earned his second first-place finish in the 400 individual medley. Saladin and junior Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wis.-Greenfield) rounded out the top-three at second and third, respectively.

In the final event of the meet, the Eagles earned another sweep in the 200 free relay, but it was not enough to overcome the Wildcats, as Eastern fell 184-113.

On the springboard, freshman Al'x Pierre (London, Ontario- St. Thomas Aquinas) and senior Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) paced the Eagles with fourth place finishes in the 1- and 3-meter dives with scores of 287.63 and 294.60, respectively.

EMU returns to competition when it travels to Ohio next weekend to take on Denison, Oct. 21. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
