YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a strong final round, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team placed three players inside the top-20 at the inaugural Shirley Spork EMU Invitational Tuesday, Oct. 10, on the par 72, 6,127-yard Eagle Crest Golf Club course. The Eagles equaled their lowest round of the year with a final round 307 to move into fifth-place with a two-day tally of 933 (311-315-307).
Freshman Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) posted her first career top-10 showing with 226 (75-76-75) in a tie for fifth. Junior Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) also added her second career top-10 finish with a final round 75 to tie for seventh with a 227 (76-76-75). Senior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) continued the momentum for EMU to finish inside the top-20 with a 234 (77-79-78) in 18th.
Sophomore Katelin Lawson (LaSalle, Ontario-Ridge Community-Tampa) fired the lowest round of her young career with a 79 in the third round to tie for 50th with a 252 (86-87-79). Meanwhile, sophomore Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) added a 253 (83-84-86) in 52nd-place.
Marshall University (302-294-300=896) claimed the team title by 16 strokes over runner up Bowling Green State University (302-298-312=912). Western Michigan University (304-303-310=917), Oakland University (306-318-308=932) and EMU rounded out the top five of the 10 team tournament.
In a battle that came down to the final hole, WMU's Julia Champion earned individual medalist honors with a 218 (71-74-73). Holding a one shot lead at 18, Marshall's Ylva Forslund (76-71-73=220) recorded a double bogy to fall out of the top spot and give Champion the victory.
The tournament was named in honor of the first female inducted into the E-Club Hall of Fame, Shirley Spork. While attending then-Michigan State Normal College, Spork won the Women's District Match Play Championship three times in four years. In 1947, she was the winner of the first-ever National Collegiate Championship held for women's athletics, plus she was the victor of the 1949 Michigan Amateur. In 1959 along with Marilynn Smith, Betty Hicks and Barbara Rotvig, she founded the LPGA's Teaching and Club Professional Division.
EMU closes out the fall campaign at the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational, Oct. 23-24, in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
