Thompson, Eagles Get Back on Track with 74-57 Win at Miami

1/28/2017 5:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Sophomore James Thompson IV went for 26 points and 20 rebounds

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team got back on track in a dominating 74-57 win over Miami University Saturday afternoon, Jan. 28, at Millett Hall. The Eagles (13-8, 5-3 MAC) had an efficient offensive and stifling defensive effort to pick up their first win in Oxford since 1996.

The RedHawks (9-12, 2-6 MAC) had no response for sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) as the big man had 26 points and 20 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season and 30th of his career. It was the first Eagle to go for 20 and 20 in the modern statistical era which dates back to 1998.

Also in double figures were senior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) and junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College High School) who had 12 and 10 respectively. Bond also had a game-high seven assists, six steals, and two blocks while redshirt sophomore Jordan Nobles (Canton, Mich.-Canton) led EMU in blocks with a career-high four.

As a team, Eastern controlled all facets of the contest, shooting 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the floor while holding Miami to 35.1 percent (20-of-57), including just 20 percent (3-of-15) from three. The EMU defense had 11 blocks, its second straight game with double digit blocks and third time this season. They forced MU into 19 turnovers, including 14 steals, which turned into 20 of EMU's points. They also controlled the paint, out-rebounding Miami, 44-30, and out-scoring them down low, 38-28.

The Eagles came out strong, gaining an early advantage, 8-2, behind six points from Thompson. After the first media, Bond drilled a three to extend the lead to 11-2, as the defense continued to clamp down on the RedHawks.

EMU's advantage raced to 17-3 after fast break layup from Bond and a Mangum three, forcing an MU timeout with 12 minutes until halftime. The RedHawks responded after the break in action, going on an 11-2 run to cut it to 19-14, before the run was broken by a thunderous dunk from Thompson, putting him in double digits, to make it 21-14 at the under-eight TO.

The lead went back to double figures not long after, as free throws, a huge Thompson dunk, and a nifty lay-up by redshirt junior Nick Madray (Mississauga, Onatrio-Stephen Lewis (Binghamton)) made it 27-16. Meanwhile, the Eagle defense was suffocating, forcing nine steals and forcing MU to foul on the ensuing fast breaks. With the free throws, Eastern maintained the 30-18 advantage into the final media.

Eastern's double-digit lead held true the rest of the half, with Miami only able to get within 10. With under a minute left, back-to-back three's from Mangum and Bond, the latter at the buzzer, put the Eagles up 41-27 into the half.

EMU picked up where they left off in the second half, with a steal and lay-in by Bond in the first possession of the half, followed by buckets from sophomore Baylee Steele (Norwalk, Iowa-Norwalk (Des Moines Area C.C.)) and Thompson to extend the lead to 20, 47-27, and forcing a Miami timeout. The RedHawks trimmed the lead down to 15 before a floater from Mangum snapped the streak, and made it 49-32 early on in the half.

The lead stayed consistent up to the middle of the half, as they continued to stifle the RedHawk offense. Coming out of the under-12 timeout, Bond had the Eagles' tenth block of the day, which led to a transition bucket and a 17-point Eagle lead. The advantage extended to 19 soon after on a Mangum jumper with 10 minutes to play.

Miami wouldn't go away though, going on a 7-0 run t get back within 12 with eight minutes to play. A Thompson slam on the alley-oop from Bond put the tally at 60-46 at the media timeout. Both offenses went cool over the next four minute stretch to make it 66-49 down the final stretch. The Eagles didn't yield the lead any further though, coasting to the 17-point win.

Eastern gets back into action next week, Tuesday, Jan. 31 when it hosts Kent State University. Tip-off versus the Flashes is set for 7 p.m.
