YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
Despite another double-double from sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist), the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped a back and forth battle to Kent State, 70-64, Tuesday, Jan. 31, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles (13-9, 5-4 MAC) tied the game with 39 seconds remaining, but clutch free throws from the Golden Flashes (12-10, 4-5 MAC) sealed the game.

Eastern finished the game 21-of-57 from the field (36.8 percent), while also sinking six long balls. Eastern controlled the fast break battle, 8-4, in addition to bench scoring, 35-18. The EMU defense forced a whopping 23 turnovers on the game, turning them into 11 steals.

Senior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) had a strong game from downtown, drilling five three pointers and finishing with a team-high total of 22 points, as well as five rebounds. Thompson finished 6-of-10 from the floor, totaling 14 points and 14 rebounds, with nine of those coming on the offensive end. It was the 19th double-double of the season and the 31st of his career. Junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College High School) also had a solid day, stuffing the stat sheet with nine points, five assists, three steals, and two blocks.

Eastern got off to a slow start, as the Golden Flashes controlled the early portion of the game to the tune of a 9-0 lead at the 16:11 mark. Thompson scored the Eagles' first points of the game, bringing down an offensive board and laying it in to make it 9-2. The sophomore continued carrying the Green and White, knocking down a jumper and shortly after notching a steal and fast break layup. At the first media timeout, Kent State held a six-point lead, 14-8.

After a brief scoring drought, Bond swiped a pass and threw down a dunk on the other end, after which redshirt senior Ray Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) tacked on two more on a fast break layup. After being down by eight, EMU cut the lead to four, 18-14. Another bucket from Bond, and then a tough layup from Thompson, tied it up with less than 10 minutes in the half. The Baton Rouge, La. native then gave EMU its first lead of the game, 20-18.

Kent State tied it up shortly after at 20, and then briefly took the lead. Mangum came right back, evening things up again at 22, but the Golden Flashes then drilled a three to take the 25-22 lead. After a bucket from redshirt junior Nick Madray (Mississauga, Ontario-Stephen Lewis (Binghamton)), the score stood at 25-24 with 3:45 remaining in the first half.

After Kent State pushed the lead to three, Mangum drained a long ball to tie the game once again at 27. The back and forth play continued, with the Flashes taking the lead once again, after which Bond took it right back with less than 1:30 on the clock. Mangum continued his hot streak, sinking another three to make it 33-31. The half came to a close shortly after, with the Eagles in front 35-31.

The Golden Flashes scored the first points of the second half, tying the game at 35 shortly after. Senior Ty Toney (Atlanta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands College)) gave the Eagles a one-point lead on the next possession with a free throw, but KSU came right back to jump ahead once again. Mangum then sunk his third long ball of the game, making it 41-38 EMU with 15:35 to go.

The trend continued, with the Richmond, Va. native drilling his fourth three pointer of the game, keeping the EMU lead at three, 44-41. From there, both teams continually went to the free throw line, as the scoring slowed down and stood at 46-45 with 11:48 remaining. Following a media timeout, Kent tied the game for the 10th time at 47 apiece.

Eastern roared back on the ensuing possessions, retaking the lead, 51-47, with less than 10 minutes to play. However, the Golden Flashes tied the game yet again after a 4-0 run, forcing an EMU timeout at the 8:15 mark. Thompson broke the tie with a nice mid-range jumper, making it 53-51. Kent State then earned a pair of trips to the line, evening things up at 53.

As he had done throughout the game, Mangum broke the tie with his fifth three of the game, putting the Eagles back in front, 56-53. Kent State then went on a 4-0 run, retaking the lead, 57-56, with less than four minutes on the clock. A pair of free throws from Lee cut the KSU lead back to one, 59-58, with three minutes to play.

As the clock ticked down, Eastern trailed by two, 62-60, with less than two minutes to go. A clutch bucket from Mangum kept the KSU lead at two, 64-62, with 1:24 remaining. Toney then sunk two huge free throws to even things up at 64 with just 39 seconds left. However, Kent State then converted four of their own to put the game out of reach for EMU. The game ended shortly after with a final tally of 70-64.

The Eagles will next make the long trip west to DeKalb, Ill. for a bout with the Huskies of Northern Illinois. Action from the NIU Convocation Center is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
