YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped a home game to Ball State University, Tuesday, Jan. 24, by a final tally of 88-80. The Eagles (12-8, 4-3 MAC) came within three in the second half, but the Cardinals (13-7, 4-3 MAC) held on for the victory.

Eastern finished 27-of-68 (39.7 percent) from the field, including a 9-of-19 mark from downtown. The Green and White forced 19 turnovers throughout the game, turning them into 10 steals and 16 points off of those Cardinal miscues. The Eagles also completed the game with eight fast break points, while Ball State finished with just two.

Individually, senior Ray Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) had a big game, scoring 24 points, and sinking four three pointers. It was the Detroit, Mich. native's eighth game notching 20-or-more points. Junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College High School) stuffed the stat sheet by tallying 17 points, five assists, four steals, and a block. Senior Ty Toney (Atlanta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands College)) kicked in 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, and a pair of thefts, while Baylee Steele (Norwalk, Iowa-Norwalk (Des Moines Area C.C.)) was strong defensively, recording a career-best five blocks in the game.

Sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) was the first to score for the Eagles, tying things at two in the early goings on a put-back dunk. Neither team could muster much offense within the first three and a half minutes, as the score remained tied at two with 16:30 to go in the first. Lee gave EMU its first lead of the game, sinking a pair from the line to make it 4-2. However, Ball State quickly tied it up once again, and the score at the first media timeout stood at 4-4.

After a basket from each team, the Cardinals took the lead on a jumper, making it 8-6 with less than 15 minutes in the half. Ball State continued their attack, pushing the lead to 12-6 at the 12:22 mark. Toney and Thompson responded with back-to-back buckets to come within two, but a timely three from the Cardinals extended their lead back to five. A pair of long balls from senior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) kept EMU right behind Ball State, 17-16, but the Cardinals continued scoring to preserve their lead.

The hot shooting from BSU continued, as the lead ballooned to 27-18 near the eight-minute mark. Lee sunk a big three to remain within single digits, as the score at the third media timeout of the half was 28-21. The 6-foot-3 combo guard then went to the charity stripe, sinking both to pull EMU within five, 28-23. The next possession saw Bond make a jumper, cutting the lead to just three, 28-25.

Ball State scored on a three, but Lee came right back with a long ball of his own, and EMU remained behind by three, 31-28, with 3:19 to go until the break. The Cardinals scored a quick four points, making it 35-28 as the clock ticked down to halftime. A trio from the charity stripe then made it a 10-point game, 38-28. Eastern picked up one more bucket, and the halftime score stood at 38-30.

Ball State scored first in the second half, increasing the lead to double digits, but Lee came right back once again with a three to make it 40-33. A jumper from Toney on the next possession cut the lead to five, but BSU came right back to make it 42-35. The first media timeout of the half saw Ball State ahead by nine, 44-35.

Redshirt senior Quaran Jones (Fargo, N.D.-Ecorse (Findlay)) then went to the charity stripe, converting both to make it 44-37. Once again, the Cardinals responded quickly, making it a 12-point game, 49-37, at the 15:30 mark. Lee continued his solid game, driving the lane and sinking a tough layup to bring the Green and White back within 10, 49-39.

Eastern continued to score, but Ball State did as well, preserving the double digit lead. As the 12-minute mark approached, the Cardinals held a 12-point lead, 57-45. Coming out of a timeout, Bond sunk a huge three and was fouled in the process. He then drilled the free throw to complete the four-point play, making it 57-49.

The Green and White then responded with a quick 7-0 run, coming within three, 59-56, after a thunderous dunk from Bond. The run stopped there, however, as Ball State scored four straight to extend the lead at seven, 63-56. The Cardinals remained in front, 70-56, before Bond converted two free throws to make it 70-58.

Both teams continued trading baskets and BSU remained in front by double digits, 74-62, with less than four minutes to go. Lee then sank a three, and Jones downed a tough layup to pull the Eagles back within single digits, 76-67. With time beginning to become a factor, Eastern needed to put up a lot of points in a hurry.

The Green and White came within eight, 79-71, on the heels of free throws from Lee, but a three-point play from Ball State put the lead back at 11, 82-71, with less than two minutes to play. EMU cut it to nine once again on another Bond dunk, after which the Baltimore, Md. native drilled a three to make it 82-76. Eastern kept it within single digits, but could not complete the comeback, falling to the Cardinals by a final score of 88-80.

Eastern next heads south for a matchup with Miami, Saturday, Jan. 28. Action from Oxford is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
