YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team came out victorious at a tri-dual Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21, at Jones Natatorium. The Eagles soared past Wayne State University, 156-100, and overpowered Tiffin University, 169-84.

Sophomore Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) and juniors Connor Finnigan (Indianapolis, Ind.-Warren Central), Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), and Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) kicked off the tri-dual with a first-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The Eagles clocked in with a time of 1:32.22 to edge out the second-place squad from Wayne State.

Senior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) paced a clean sweep for the Eagles in the 1000 Freestyle, winning the race with a time of 9:38.98. Freshmen Tanner Olmos (Clovis, Calif.-Buchanan) and Eric Akins (Houston, Texas-Klein) completed the dominating effort, placing second and third, respectively, behind career-best times.

Eastern Michigan posted another sweep in the 200 Free, extending its lead in the team standings. Freshman Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy Center) was the top finisher, besting the field with a time of 1:41.88, while Kawaguchi and sophomore Ryan Current (Chanhassen, Minn.-Minnetonka) rounded out the top-three.

After a first-place finish by senior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) in the 100 Backstroke, freshman Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev) wrapped up second-place in the 100 Breaststroke.

The Eagles followed with a win in the 200 Butterfly where Burton bested the field by more than two seconds, clocking in with a time of 1:50.98.

Sophomore Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) added a win in the 50 Free to extend EMU's lead in the team standings as the meet shifted focus to the springboard.

Claiming the top spot in both the 1 and 3 meter dives, sophomore Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) paced a dominant performance by the Eagles. Gillis scored 317.45 on the 1-meter, and 328 on the 3-meter, to lead the way for the Green and White. Junior Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) scored 288.95 to take second on the 3-meter, while sophomore Nicholas Fox (Covington, Ky.-Scott) nabbed a runner-up finish on the 1-meter.

Out of the diving break, Tyson posted his second win of the afternoon, this time winning the 100 Free. Fellow sophomore Ricky Perez clocked in with a time of 1:51.12 in the 200 Back to best the field, before freshman Aaron Hendry (Evans, Ga.-Evans) picked up a second-place finish in the 200 Breast.

Senior Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4), Johnson, and Kawaguchi closed out the meet with wins. Rzyski won the 500 Free, while Johnson and Kawaguchi were the top finishers in the 100 Fly and 400 Individual Medley, respectively.

Eastern Michigan returns to the pool next weekend, Jan. 28, when the Eagles make the trek east to Buffalo, N.Y. for a Mid-American Conference dual against the University at Buffalo. The meet is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
