AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team got into an early hole they could not get out of in a 70-63 defeat to MAC leader Akron University, Friday night, Jan. 20, at James A. Rhodes Arena. It was just EMU's (12-7, 4-2 MAC) second loss in its last eight games, while Akron improved to 16-3 and 6-0 in the MAC.
The Eagles spread the wealth with eight players contributing on the score sheet, led by seniors Ty Toney (Alpharetta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands College)) and Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)), who finished with 17 and 13, respectively. Sophomore Baylee Steele (Norwalk, Iowa-Norwalk (Des Moines Area C.C.)) also finished in double figures, scoring 10 while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.
As a team, EMU outscored the Zips in the second half, 35-32, but the large first half deficit was too much to overcome. They out-rebounded the Zips by a 32-29 margin, while also outscoring UA, 36-28, in the paint.
Eastern got into an early hole, giving up a pair of three's and a fast break layup to trail 8-0 just two minutes into the game. A couple of free throws from redshirt junior Nick Madray (Mississauga, Ontario-Stephen Lewis (Binghamton)) got EMU on the board, but a third three pointer put Akron up 11-2. EMU's first field goal came on a Mangum three pointer, but Akron led 13-5 at the first media timeout.
Mangum kept up the scoring, getting four more on a swift pair of jumpers, but Akron had the responses and continued to lead at the under 12, 19-9. The Eagles kept it within single digits with layups from Toney and redshirt senior Quaran Jones (Fargo, N.D.-Ecorse (Findlay)), but Akron continued to bury three pointers to maintain a steady lead, which ballooned to 27-15 with just under eight minutes remaining in the first.
The Eagles continued to work, but could not chip into the lead despite a three from junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College HS), and continued to trail by a 34-22 margin at the under four timeout. Coming out of the break, senior Ray Lee(Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) drilled his first three of the game to get back within nine, but Akron held tough to maintain the 10 point halftime lead, 38-28.
The second half began with Steele scoring six of EMU's first eight points, but UA continued to have an answer and they still led by a 45-36 margin at the first stoppage of play. EMU continued chipping, getting within seven on a thunderous Bond dunk, but Akron still led by nine, 48-39, with under 12 to play.
Both teams went ice cold over the next three minutes, with neither getting a field goal until under nine minutes to go. Bond broke the dry spell with a layup, but Akron went back-to-back with a three-point play and an alley-oop to wake the crowd back up and get back ahead by 12 with nine minutes to play.
Akron's lead extended to 15 on a three pointer out of the under eight timeout, but Toney answered with a layup to get into double figures, and Steele got another bucket to get back within 11. After not being able to get any closer, EMU trailed 63-52 coming out of the final media timeout.
Eastern was not done yet though, getting to within six after a Mangum three pointer and back-to-back baskets, forcing an Akron TO. The Eagles got within four points after a steal and fast break bucket with 1:30 to play, but Akron stopped the bleeding with a free throw, and after a missed jumper, they got more two more free throws to get back up seven with 35 seconds to play. With the lead late, the Zips secured the 70-63 win.
Eastern gets back into action this Tuesday, Jan. 24, with a home showdown with the Ball State Cardinals. Tip-off from the Convocation Center is set for 9 p.m. and will be broadcast on ASN.
